The SJ showing is at the south end of Sericite Ridge at the headwaters of a north flowing tributary of Snippaker Creek, approximately 18 kilometres southeast of the Bronson Airstrip on Iskut River and 59 kilometres southwest of Bob Quinn Lake on Highway 37.
The SJ showing occurs in an area underlain by marine sedimentary and volcanic package of the Upper Triassic Stuhini Group, near the contact with Lower Jurassic andesitic volcanics of the Hazelton Group. The stratigraphy has been intruded by Early Jurassic monzodiorite to gabbro.
Talus fines samples in 1990 returned up to 3 grams per tonne gold and defined a 200 metre(+) area of greater than 500 parts per billion gold. In 1990 a prominent, 5 metre wide northwest-southeast shear was mapped along the upper edge of this anomalous area. The shear dips moderately to the southwest.
The area is underlain by rocks of the banded siltstone unit which has been variably affected by sericite alteration and silica flooding. Disseminated pyrite occurs throughout and appears to increase with more intense alteration. Pyrite content varies between 2 to 10 per cent although the presence of numerous iron stained vugs suggests that much pyrite has been leached from surface exposures.
Rock samples from the shear and nearby sericite-silica-pyrite rock yielded anomalous gold, copper and zinc including highs of 0.34 gram per tonne gold, 0.048 per cent copper and 0.035 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 21365). A sample of an 8 centimetre thick galena vein (5-113) assayed 6.91 grams per tonne gold and 39.4 grams per tonne silver; the underlying 10 centimetres of sericite-silica-pyrite rock with 70 per cent disseminated pyrite assayed 2.18 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 21365).
Work History
The Kim 1-36 claims were held by Great Plains Development Company of Canada, Ltd. Work during 1972 to 1974 included reconnaissance geochemical soil and silt surveys, geological mapping, and a geochemical soil survey (98 samples) over 6.4 line-kilometres covering Kim 13-22, and 26.
Exploration in the area of the Pins showing area (MINFILE 104B 111 and 104B 115) located in the southern portion of property was first recorded in 1972 by Cobre Explorations. This work consisted of prospecting, geological mapping, soil geochemical surveys, magnetometer surveys and ground electromagnetic surveys.
The Pelican property was staked in 1982 by Mr. Chris Graf as part of the larger Gossan Property which extended a further 10 km to the northwest. In 1983, Lonestar Resources Ltd. completed an extensive prospecting, regional mapping, silt sampling and soil sampling program over the entire Gossan Property (Assessment Report 11332). This program delineated five significantly anomalous areas.
In 1985, Western Canadian Mining Corporation signed an option agreement with Mr. Graf whereby Western Canadian could earn a 60 per cent interest in the Gossan Property. In 1987, Western Canadian completed a geological mapping, and a sampling program over portions of the Pelican Property; this including 903 soil, 23 silt and 304 rock samples (Assessment Report 16931).
In August 1988, Cathedral Gold Corporation signed an option agreement whereby Cathedral Gold Corporation could earn Western Canadian's 60 per cent interest in two separate portions of the Gossan Property. In 1988, Cathedral Gold completed a rock chip sampling-prospecting program during which 237 rock chip and 383 soil samples were taken. The results returned from this program include: 0.5 metre wide quartz vein the area within the present Southeast Grid which returned a gold value of 6 grams per tonne , a float sample from the Snow Grid area which assayed 11 grams per tonne gold and mineralized float near the Pelican Grid samples of which returned gold values of up to 3 grams per tonne gold.
In 1989, Aerodat Ltd. was contracted to complete an airborne electromagnetic and magnetometer survey over the entire property. This survey totalled 386 kilometres in flight length and outlined several electromagnetic and magnetic anomalies worthy of follow-up.
In 1990, Cathedral Gold Corp explored Pelican (Gossan) property, including the Southeast, Sericite (MINFILE 104B 318), Pins (MINFILE 104B 111 and MINFILE 104B 115), Snow (MINFILE 104B 117), Lake (MINFILE 104B 028) and Pelican (MINFILE 104B 214). They collected 494 soil and 240 rock samples and conducted 23.9 kilometres of ground electromagnetic surveying (VLF) and 1.1 kilometres of Induced Polarization (IP) surveying.
Imperial Metal's 2015 exploration program outlined multiple narrow northwest trending gossanous shear zones in the slopes at the SJ showing with associated 5 – 50 cm wide quartz-pyrite veining as well as narrow (~1 m wide) basaltic dikes both trending northwest to north-northwest and dipping moderate to steeply towards the west. Thirteen rock samples showed low anomalous values up to 170 ppb Au and 188 ppm Cu (Assessment Report 35670).
The 2019 exploration program of Imperial Metals examined and rock sampled 5 zones on the Pelican property, one of which was on the ridgeline approximately 350 metres southwest of the SJ showing (Zone 2). Geochemical analysis from the ridgeline rock sampling reports Au values ranging from 2.1 to 7256.3 parts per billion, Zn values ranging from 2 to 285 parts per million Ag values ranging from 0.05 to 15.7 parts per million, and Cu values ranging from 3 to 2247.2 parts per million (Assessment Report 38871).
