The Tom occurrence is located on the north westerly slopes of an unnamed, northeasterly flowing, tributary of Volcano Creek.
The area is underlain by pyroclastic and sedimentary units of the Lower Jurassic Betty Creek Formation (Hazelton Group). These include a complex package of andesitic to rhyolitic tuffs, tuffaceous wackes, conglomerates and limestone. These have been intruded by feldspar and quartz feldspar porphyries, which are a part of the northeast end of the Lower Jurassic to Upper Triassic Lehto porphyry.
Locally, two types of mineralization occur:
1.) Chalcopyrite- bearing quartz veins in the Lehto porphyry.
2.) Quartz-sericite alteration associated with major faults, with disseminated pyrite and local chalcopyrite.
Sampling of chalcopyrite mineralized veins assayed between 0.35 and 1.43 per cent copper, while sampling of fracture-controlled concentrations of chalcopyrite from the quartz sericite alteration zone assayed up to 8,981 parts per million copper with 13,231 parts per million zinc (Assessment Report 22572).
Work History
The Tom 1-4 claims were staked in 1988. In 1989, Nicholson and Associates carried out a preliminary program, which consisted of a geological examination, rock geochemistry and stream sediment geochemistry. In 1990, Orequest Consultants completed a limited program of prospecting, geological mapping, silt and rock sampling. In 1991, New Caledonian Geological Consulting carried out a three-day program of geochemical sampling. In 1992, Kennecott Canada, on the behalf of Ecstall Mining, completed a program of prospecting and geochemical sampling.
In 2020, Eskay Mining Corp. completed a program of prospecting, rock sampling, ground and airborne geophysical surveys and 4335 metres of diamond drilling in 20 holes on the area as part of the Sib-Corey-North Mitchell property. The geophysical surveys consisted of a 911.7 line-kilometre airborne electromagnetic survey, a 55.85 line-kilometre induced polarization survey and a 43.19 line-kilometre magnetotelluric survey. Drilling was performed on the TV (MINFILE 104B 385) and Jeff (MINFILE 104B 525) occurrences.
