The Cuba North showing is hosted by Permian limestones and represents fault-controlled galena-sphalerite-silver rich veins with abundant barite and Fe carbonate, and lesser silica which is sporadically vuggy. Mineralization occurs as galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite with secondary smithsonite and malachite in sheared barite-calcite-limestone crackle breccia. Pyrite and chalcopyrite with malachite were also noted.
The North and South Cuba zones (600 metres apart) are unusual in that they lie immediately west of and appear to be controlled by the Newmont Fault which forms the eastern boundary of the Newmont Lake graben. The North and South Cuba occurrences may have originally been part of a single mineralized body that has been offset along the NE trending fault by right lateral movement.
At the North Cuba zone, the limestone and chert have been deformed by stresses associated with shearing and faulting resulting in a distinctive crackle texture. Subsequent differential weathering of limestone and chert rich portions has produced castellated limestone in hues of yellow, brown and white. The exposure is 150 metres long by 50 metres wide bordered by a large southeast facing talus slopes.
In the area of the North Cuba Showings, two isolated limestone pinnacles approximately 15 metres apart were sampled along the strike (due to steep cliff topography), and across the strike in easier areas of access. On the north pinnacle, continuous 1.5 metre chip sampling along a 23-metre section of the strike of mineralized, sheared and brecciated limestone indicated an overall increase in silver/lead/zinc compared to unaltered limestone in the area. On the south pinnacle 1.5 metre continuous chip samples along an 18-metre section across the strike of the limestone unit produced values ranging up to 133.72 grams per tonne silver, 1.67 per cent lead and 9.54 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 18506).
In 2012, mineralization at the North Cuba showing was confirmed with sample H231501, taken from a barite-cemented breccia with high percentages of sphalerite that assayed 4.29 per cent zinc and 18.1 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 33620).
Work History
Structural and orthophoto interpretation work was performed on the Gab 5 to 10 claim area in 1987 on behalf of Northwest Gold Syndicate (Assessment Report 17210). A 105.67 kilometre airborne magnetic and electromagnetic survey was completed. Minor prospecting occurred on the Gab 7 and 9 and Ken zone.
In 1988, the Cuba showings were discovered on the Gab 8 claim. During the 1988 field season, geological mapping, prospecting and trenching was carried out over the Gab 7, 8 and 10 claim area for Pezgold Resource Corporation. Zones where work was done included the Ken, Glacier and North and South Cuba zones. A total of 398 rock chip samples was collected from the claims. A modest drill program totalling 760 metres was designed to initially test the strength and continuity of these various zones. Six short holes totalling 456 metres tested the Ken Zone.
In 2005, consulting geologist Gerald Ray examined parts of the Newmont Lake property on behalf of Romios.
In 2012, Romios Gold Resources completed drilling, ground magnetics, audiomagnetotellurics (“AMT”) and borehole geophysics on the ‘72, Ken and Northwest Zones in addition to sample collection and general prospecting which also included Arseno, Arseno Ridge, Glacier, 2 Bad Everest, and North Cuba zones.
In 2013 Geotech Ltd. carried out a helicopter-borne electromagnetic (ZTEM) and aeromagnetic geophysical survey for Romios Gold Resources Inc over the Newmont Lake Block, comprising parts of the Newmont Lake property (Geophysics Report, Assessment Report 35016, Appendix VI). The following 21 mineral occurrences were covered by the survey: Ken (104B 027), 72 (Dirk) (104B (114), McLymont (104B 126), Northwest (McLymont), (104B 281), Jazzman (104B 282), Ridge (104B 325), Gab Northwest (104B 333), GAB 12 (104B 335), GAB 11 (104B 336), NEW (104B 379), Telena (104B 428), Bren (104B 429), Arseno (104B 432), Mon 2 (104B 433), Glacier Zone (104B 438), Camp Ridge (104B 441), Kirby NE (104B 442), Black Bear (104B 459), 2Bad (104B 460), Bridget (104B 462), O'Neil (104B 463).
In 2014, Romios Gold Resources Inc. conducted a prospecting and sampling program that included the evaluation of various showings and mineralized occurrences on the Newmont Lake and Trek Properties. A total of 314 rock chip samples and reconnaissance rock samples and 26 stream silt samples were collected.
In 2015, Romios Gold reported that a program of additional prospecting and sampling was carried out on the Burgundy Ridge discovery (Exploration and Mining in British Columbia 2015, page 135).
No work is reported for 2016 or 2017.
In January and February 2018, Geotech Ltd. carried out a helicopter-borne Versatile Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM) and aeromagnetic geophysical survey on behalf of Romios Gold Resources Inc. The survey covered three claim blocks: DIRK, KEN and NORTHWEST comprising parts of the Newmont Lake property and covered a total of 714 line-kilometres (Assessment Report 37492, containing Geotech Ltd Geophysical Report (Appendix Two)). The Cuba North and Cuba South (104B 334) occur within the Northwest Block which also covers the following mineral occurrences: Northwest (McLymont), (104B 281), Jazzman (104B 282), Gab Northwest (104B 333), Cuba South (334), GAB 12 (104B 335), GAB 11 (104B 336), Arseno (104B 432), Syenite (104B 439), Cuba North (104B 440), Camp Ridge (104B 441), Kirby NE (104B 442), Kirby SE (104B 443), Thumper (104B 445), Black Bear (104B 459), Ray (104B 696), Arseno Ridge (104B 709), Vera (104B 710), Gerry (104B 713). The aeromagenitic survey indicates that the Cuba North is situated at the southeast edge of a magnetic high; significant VTEM anomalies are located about 3 kilometres to the north and 3 kilometres to the southwest.
In December 2018, Crystal Lake Mining announced that it had acquired a 100 per cent interest in the 436 square kilometre Newmont Lake Project from Romios Gold.
In 2019, Crystal Lake Mining Corp conducted a drill program, on the Burgundy Ridge prospect area (104B 325) and the Northwest deposit. They also conducted extensive grassroots exploration. Crystal Lake sampled and mapped the Cuba-Thumper trend along its 2.5 to 3.2 kilometre length. This trend is found between the Cuba prospects (104B 334 and 440) in the north and Thumper (104B 445) to the south. The trend is characterized by a high-grade high-grade silver-zinc-copper-lead barite system.
