Capsule Geology

The St Eugene area is underlain by the Hazelton Group which is a northwest trending belt of folded volcanic rocks which contains a thick sedimentary sequence infolded along a synclinal axis. This group is bounded on the west by the Coast Crystalline Complex and on the east by the Bowser Basin.

The host rocks are the Lower Jurassic Unuk River Formation of the Hazelton Group. The host rock is primarily greenstone with minor amounts of argillite. Four parallel quartz veins strike north-northeast and dip steeply east. Three of these veins are grouped within 16 metres and cross from a siliceous host, through a narrow band of argillite, and then into the greenstones. The fourth vein lies 50 metres to the east. The veins widen up to 1.6 metres but are generally less than 0.3 metre wide. The largest is 18 metres in length. Mineralization consists of galena, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite.

In 1927, a 60-centimetre sample of one of the veins assayed 384 grams per tonne silver, 18 per cent lead, 8 per cent zinc, and trace gold (Minister of Mines Annual Report 1927, pages 104,105).

Later work, during the late 2010s, identified the Mayor, Top Rope and Tombsone zones, to the west and southwest of the St. Eugene occurrence. The type and style of mineralization for these zones was not reported.

Work History

The St. Eugene group of 10 claims, consisting of the St. Eugene, St. Eugene Nos. 2 & 3, St. Eugene Extension, St. Eugene Fraction, Grey Copper, Grey Copper Fraction, Big Ben, and Big Ben No. 1 claims, was owned by Albert Johnson and associates in 1927. The St. Eugene No. 3 claim (Lot 4502) was Crown-granted in 1927. No development work has been reported. Granduc Mines, Limited located the Wolf group of 10 claims across the south end of Summit Lake in 1963. No significant mineralization was reported, and the claims were forfeited.

In 1998, the Summit I, 2 claims of Fundamental Resources covered the old workings of the St. Eugene crown grants. They reported that four parallel northeast striking quartz veins occur on the southern portion of Summit 2 at an elevation of approximately 1280 metres. Mineralization consists of pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and tetrahedrite. Three of the veins are 7.6 metres and the fourth is 46 metres east. The veins are 1.5 metres or less wide. Trenches and open cuts have been made on these showings. A short adit and several trenches were located on the south portion of Summit 1. Three parallel northwest trending quartz-carbonate veins contain 1 to 15 per cent galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and trace amounts of tetrahedrite.

In 2016, Triangle Exploration Limited (optionee from Eilat Explorations) completed a 566-kilometre airborne magnetic and radiometric survey which extends east, north and south from the eastern shore of Summit Lake to the eastern boundary of Eilat Exploration's 2012 airborne survey. The 2016 survey is a continuation of the airborne survey flown for Eilat Exploration in 2012 (Assessment Report 33511). Data collected from the 2016 Summit Lake survey block were merged with data collected in 2012 (Assessment Report 36318). The combined data covers 10 mineral occurrences documented in MINFILE: Scottie Gold (104B 034), St. Eugene (104B 036), Scottie North (104B 074), Blueberry (104B 133), Hicks (104B 139), Summit 5 (104B 436), Summit Gossan (104B 648), Summit Nunatak (104B 649), Glacier Edge (104B 650).

During 2018 through 2020, Scottie Resources Corp. completed programs of rock and auger (tailings) sampling, airborne and ground geophysical surveys and diamond drilling on the Scottie Gold property. During this time, rock samples from the St. Eugene, Mayor, Top Rope and Tombstone zones each yielded at least one sample assaying from 1 to 10 grams per tonne gold (Equity Exploration Consultants Ltd. [2021-06-07]: Technical Report on the Scottie Gold Mine Property, British Columbia, Canada).
