The Skilokis occurrence veins are located on the northwest portion of Blunt Mountain, 27 kilometres east of Hazelton. The property was explored by Atna Resources Ltd. and Noranda Exploration as a joint venture in 1986. Exploration work included prospecting, soil and rock geochemistry, geological mapping, magnetic and VLF-EM surveying, hand trenching and diamond drilling.
The area is underlain by clastic sediments of the Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Bowser Lake Group which are intruded by a monzonitic to dioritic pluton of the Late Cretaceous Bulkley Plutonic Suite, which is in turn cut by intermediate feldspar porphyry dikes.
The pluton and hornfelsed sedimentary rocks are cut by well developed, northeast trending sheeted joints which are mineralized by amphibole-quartz-magnetite-apatite-sulphide veins which may be zoned such that they change laterally to predominantly quartz-arsenopyrite veins. Sulphides observed are pyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, chalcopyrite and possibly tetrahedrite. The veins strike 020 degrees, dipping 70 degrees west.
Over a strike length of three kilometres, at least six showings have been discovered, although several of the showings could be exposures of the same vein system, some are probably parallel or en echelon structures. From the southwest, the showings and veins have been named: Clay Creek, Old Post, PS, New Mound, Mound, Ferri Creek, Ridge and Lost. Chip samples yielded results as high as 3.3 grams per tonne gold and 268 grams per tonne silver across 1.2 metres (Assessment Report 16273). Six diamond-drill holes (262 metres) have been completed on the showings and although core recovery was very poor, one hole yielded 2.4 grams per tonne gold and 829 grams per tonne silver across 30 centimetres (Hole 86-1, Assessment Report 16273).
WORK HISTORY
The release of a government geochemical survey in June 1984 indicated a stream sediment sample from Skilokis Creek had anomalous silver, lead, arsenic, antimony values. The general source area was staked by Atna Resources and Noranda Exploration.
Subsequent work in 1985, both companies located mineralization in a tributary (Clay Creek) of Skilokis Creek and a cirque to the northwest (North Cirque) which is at the headwaters of Ferri Creek. A 50-50 Joint Venture Agreement was formed between Atna and Noranda in late 1985 and a limited exploration program was completed in the fall. Based on encouraging results, a multi-faceted exploration program was put in place consisting of prospecting , geological mapping, gridding, soil and silt geochemistry, magnetic and VLF-EM geophysical surveying, hand trenching and a three-hole drill program totaling 192 metres.
In 1987, the joint venture completed additional soil geochemistry over newly established grid lines, 31 hand trenches were dug, and a three-hole drill program was completed totaling 186 metres. The exploration programs were successful in discovering six new and significant showings along a 2.7 kilometre structural trend.
In 1990, a further nine rock geochemical samples were collected for analysis on behalf of Noranda and Atna Resources. In 1991, limited rock sampling, prospecting and trail construction on the Blunt Mountain property was carried out on behalf of Atna Resources and Noranda Exploration. One day was spent prospecting and exploring in the area of the Lost vein. This showing, located on the steep northeast slope of Lokis Ridge and 260 metres northeast from the Ridge Vein, was re-discovered in 1987.
In 1994, six rock samples were collected on behalf of Atna Resources; two from porphyry dikes and four from vein material from the showings in the Skilokis area.
In 1996, soil samples were collected on the Loki 1-8 and 10 claims by Atna Resources along traverse lines spaced at 50-metre intervals with sample sites established at 25-metre intervals. A total of 1025 metres of grid lines were established over the Skilokis area from which 49 soil samples were collected and submitted for analysis.
In 2006, 51 rock samples and 6 petrographic samples were collected on the BL claims by Remington Resources Inc. who held the property under option from owner United Exploration Management. The BL claims contained only one known occurrence, the Skilokis (093M 099). During the 2006 property visit, one of the original showings was located at UTM coordinates 611454E, 6123263N. The showing is a 2-3 metres sloughed-in trench containing an approximately 0.4 metre wide vein of massive galena.
In October 2008, Remington Resources Inc. entered into an option agreement with United Exploration Management Inc. to purchase an undivided 100 per cent right, title and interest in the Blunt Mountain property.
In 2014, Remington Resources Inc. completed a surficial exploration program where a total of 27 rock samples were collected from outcrop, float and old diamond-drill core on the Blunt Mountain property. The rock sampling has confirmed historic results of anomalous lead and zinc values.
