The area is underlain by Lower Jurassic Hazelton Group, Telkwa Formation volcanics comprised of andesitic flows and tuffs. The volcanics are intruded by granodioritic stocks of the Early Jurassic Topley Intrusive Suite.
Mineralization occurs as fine fracture fillings and blebs of chalcopyrite within numerous fine veinlets of calcite. The general mineral assemblage of pyrite, chalcopyrite, minor sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite, and occasional very minor bornite is found within fine-grained, greenish andesitic volcanics. Malachite, specularite, barite, and epidote also occur. Quartz, calcite and epidote are found as gangue minerals in the veins. Some free gold was reported but has not been confirmed.
A two metre chip sample assayed 0.42 per cent copper, 0.02 per cent zinc, 0.34 gram per tonne silver and 0.69 gram per tonne gold. A grab sample from the same area assayed 0.42 per cent copper and 0.27 gram per tonne gold (Singhai, 1988).
In 2007, Steve Bell traversed the Java claim east of the access road and west of Byman creek. No bedrock occurrences were encountered however angular float observed in the overburden suggests that the underlying bedrock consists of red volcanic tuff, red/green volcaniclastics and amygdaloidal basalt with minor sediments ascribed to the Telkwa formation. These rock types appear in bedrock exposed by trenching west of the prospecting area.
WORK HISTORY
The Randolph, and Cat, and 4 adjacent claims, were owned i n 1928 by Chris Wold and R.J. Jennack. Open cutting as reported at that time.
Normont Copper Ltd. in 1967 acquired the Lucky, Lady, Pehu, Black Mountain, and other groups, totalling 226 claims. Noranda Exploration Company Limited, optioned the property in 1967.
In 1968 Noranda Exploration conducted a soil geochemical and electromagnetic survey. Work by Noranda during the period of 1967 to 1969 included geochemical soil and silt surveys, airborne magnetometer and electromagnetic surveys, ground magnetic, electromagnetic, and induced potential surveys, and 152.4 metres of diamond drilling in 11 holes. The soil survey was not reliable due to the overburden however subsequent trenching revealed some zones of mineralization and the diamond drilling was placed to test these. The exploratory drilling is said to have been inconclusive.
In 1987 Crisan Resources Limited carried out a program of geological mapping, soil sampling and an airborne magnetic survey (Assessment Report 17553).
Key Point Mines Co. Ltd. in 1970 optioned 48 claims in the Black Mountain, SRF, and CU groups. Trenching was carried out in new areas, and in the vicinity of old trenches on the Black Mountain and SRF groups.
In 2007, Steve Bell conducted a reconnaissance induced polarization survey on the Java claims to assess the potential of the terrain east of the plotted Java showing. The reconnaissance style IP survey totalled 1.2 line kilometers. Lines were selected in order detect broader zones of mineralization at depth that may be related to the surface showing. No strong IP effect was observed over the course of the survey and no broad areas of mineralization are indicated.
