The Rock (Bacon Hill) occurrence is located on a small hill, approximately 500 metres northeast of the northern end of Bacon Lake, approximately 27 kilometres west of Campbell River, B.C.
Upper Triassic Vancouver Group Quatsino Formation limestone bands trend northwesterly and northerly through the centre of the property near the contact with an Early to Middle Jurassic (200 to 170 mya) Island Intrusive Complex granodiorite which underlies much of the area east of Bacon Lake.
Locally, magnetite mineralization has been identified, by diamond drilling, in andesitic tuffs, possibly of the Bonanza Group or Karmutsen Formation. Associated mineralization includes epidote, garnet, pyrite, hematite and abundant cobalt bloom (erythrite). Typically, silver is found only in trace amounts.
In 1961, three diamond drill holes were drilled in order to test a magnetic anomaly (McDougall, 1961).
- Hole #1 cut 6.4 metres of magnetite which assayed about 20 per cent iron.
- Hole #2 cut 9 metres of similarly low-grade magnetite.
- Hole #3 intersected 4.4 metres of low-grade iron and another 4.4 metres containing 53.57 per cent iron. A 1.2 metre drill interval contained 36.80 per cent iron and 37.71 grams per tonne silver.
Magnetite intersections were encountered from 1 to 19 metres depth and ranged from 3.5 to 9 metres wide in the drill holes. An average width of 6.5 metres yielded an average value of 30 per cent iron (Assessment Report 33963).
In 1987, R. Tessolini prospected the area as the Bacon claims. In 1989 and 1991, M. Sawiuk completed programs of geological mapping, rock sampling and ground magnetometer surveys on the area. In 1997, IMA Resources Corporation completed a program of geochemical sampling and geological mapping on the area as the Bacon 1-4 claims.
From 2009 through 2021, Western Gateway Minerals Inc. conducted exploration programs of prospecting, geological mapping, airborne and ground magnetic surveys and rock and stream sediment sampling, as part of the Bacon Lake property. Several magnetite lenses (pods) occur across the property, the Rock showing being one of these.
