Capsule Geology

The Whymper occurrence is located on the southeastern flank of Mount Whymper, west of Rheinhart Creek and approximately 3 kilometres south of Rheinhart Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by chert, siliceous argillite and siliciclastic rocks of the Mississippian to Pennsylvanian Fourth Lake Formation (Buttle Lake Group) and volcaniclastic rocks of the Middle to Upper Devonian Mclaughlin Ridge Formation (Sicker Group). These rocks are intruded by granodiorite and quartz diorite of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite and gabbroic to dioritic rocks of the Triassic Mount Hall Gabbro. Undivided sedimentary rocks of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group locally overlay the previous units.

Locally, light grey, silicified, intermediate volcanics host up to 10 per cent sulphide-calcite, stockworks of pyrite, sphalerite and trace chalcopyrite. The hostrock has been brecciated and contains stringers and blebs of fine-grained sulphides.

Work History

In 1983, Cominco Ltd. conducted a program of geological mapping and geochemical (rock and silt) sampling on the area immediately north as the Hart 1-2 claims. Also at this time, the area immediately west was prospected and rock sampled as the E.R.D. claim by Earl Stevens. A rock sample (67882) of schist hosting pyrite, located approximately 1.9 kilometres east-southeast of the occurrence, assayed 0.27 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 12173).

During 2009 through 2011, Rock-Con Exploration completed programs of spectral analysis, prospecting and geochemical (rock and soil) sampling on the Sognidoro property. In 2011, a sample (18012) from the occurrence assayed 2.4 grams per tonne silver and greater than 1.00 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 32850).

In 2021, Crest Resources Inc. conducted a program of prospecting and geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling on the Sognidoro property. In 2022, Reverend Mining Corp. completed a further program of prospecting and geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling on the Sognidoro property. A grab sample (907441) from the occurrence area assayed 0.11 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 42049).
