Capsule Geology

The Strawberry Pass occurrence is underlain by a generally east-striking, steep northwest-dipping sequence of dark grey argillaceous limestones, limey siltstones, fine sandstones and andesitic to dacitic volcanics and volcaniclastics of the Pennsylvanian to Permian Mount Roberts Formation. The strata in this area are sandwiched between syenitic to monzonitic rocks of the Middle Eocene Coryell Intrusions approximately 1 kilometre to the south and granodioritic rock of the Middle to Late Jurassic Nelson Intrusions a few kilometres to the north. Hornblende porphyritic to basaltic dikes intrude all other rocks in the area.

Several trenches expose a variably mineralized skarn zone containing pods, veins and disseminations of gold-bearing massive pyrrhotite±chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite and stibnite. The skarn minerals include pyroxene (diopside), quartz, carbonate, epidote and chlorite. The rocks in the trenches include limestones, shales and calc-silicate hornfels, as well as mafic and granodioritic intrusives. Quartz-carbonate veins in one trench are also reported to be rich in pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. A silicified section from this trench assayed 39.16 grams per tonne gold and 6.55 grams per tonne silver over 2 metres (Assessment Report 19741).

The property used to consist of Crown-granted claims on which numerous prospect trenches, pits and shafts were dug before the 1940s; however, no results from this work are available.

In 1987, Roy Ganderton cleaned and sampled the old workings and completed an EM geophysical survey.

In 1988, SMD Mining Company Ltd. optioned the property from Roy Ganderton. SMD Mining Company Ltd. merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corp. to form Cameco Corp. in 1988.

In 1989, Cameco Corp. completed reconnaissance geological mapping, trenching and lithogeochemical, magnetometer and EM surveys on the property.

In 1990, Cameco Corp. conducted soil sampling and ground magnetics surveys, backhoe trenching, geological mapping and prospecting. Highlights include a grab sample, which assayed 34.9 grams per tonne gold, taken from a 5 to 20 centimetre-wide bedding-controlled gossan/sulphide band (Assessment Report 20548). Later in the fall, Cameco Corp. completed a five-hole diamond drilling program totaling 429.9 metres on the property.

In 1991, Cameco Corp. dropped their option.

In 1997, Stan A. Endersby staked the Neptune claim block which encompassed the Strawberry claim block.

In 1998, Stan A. Endersby completed small EM geophysical surveys and rock sampling on the property. Highlights include sample 64397, which assayed 7 grams per tonne gold and 2.2 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 25729).

In 2009, St. Elias Mines Ltd. staked the Strawberry Flats property and executed a geochemical survey and prospecting on the property. A total of 1012 soil samples and 28 rock samples were collected. Highlights include sample SF-1, which assayed 25.55 grams per tonne gold, 6 grams per tonne silver and 0.9411 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 31499).

In 2010, Dorex Minerals Inc. completed a geological review of historic technical data and reconnaissance rock geochemical sampling and soil sampling. A total of 1012 soil samples and 28 rock samples were collected. Highlights include sample SF-TRENCH-5A, which assayed 37.1 grams per tonne gold, 12.2 grams per tonne silver and greater than 1 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 31996).
