The RDN property covers a felsic centre which lies near the top of the Lower to Middle Jurassic Hazelton Group. Variably altered dacitic to trachytic volcanics and subvolcanic intrusives, with lesser rhyolite, are overlain by carbonaceous, pyritic argillite and pillow basalt.
The Wedge Zone is a 1.5 kilometre long altered zone interpreted to be footwall alteration to a volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) system formed in a shallow marine setting. Three holes passed through the target horizon between altered, sulphide-bearing footwall felsic volcanics and fine-grained hangingwall sediments. The alteration consists of pervasive potassium feldspar and sericite alteration with local areas of silicification. The mineralization in the footwall includes pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and, sulphosalts (tetrahedrite-tennantite). The presence of chalcedonic quartz, orpiment, pyrobitumen and elevated mercury (up to 24,200 ppb) are characteristic of shallow marine, precious metal-rich VMS systems such as Eskay Creek.
Initial exploration (1989-92) of the RDN claims focused on gold-rich quartz sulphide veins in the Wedge zone area, including drill intersections of 1.95 metres at 101 grams per tonne (2.95 oz/ton) gold and 0.85 metre at 138 grams per tonne (4.0 ounces per ton) gold (www.rimfire.bc.ca/s/RDN.asp). In 2001, Newmont drilled ten holes at the Wedge zone RDN01-17 (111.0-112.5 metres) assayed 3.75 grams per tonne gold, 0.5 per cent copper, 0.07 per cent lead and 0.18 per cent zinc over 1.5 metres (www.rimfire.bc.ca/s/RDN.asp). Six drill holes were completed on the Wedge Zone in 2004. Five holes were drilled on the lower part of the zone, testing gaps in drilling on the westerly contact between the Wedge Zone dacitic volcanic rocks and the overlying argillaceous sedimentary rocks, and one hole tested a similar structural and stratigraphic setting on the east contact of the volcanic rocks, across a hypothesized anticline.
The RDN 1-4 claims were staked in November 1987 to cover a small but intense gossan on which no work had previously been reported. The following September, Neil DeBock carried out three days of prospecting on the claims, taking ten silt samples and 27 rock samples.
In 1989, Noranda Exploration staked their GOZ claims immediately north of the RDN and optioned the RDN 1-4 claims and did limited sampling. In 1990, Noranda and High Frontier Resources carried out a joint exploration program over the RDN and GOZ claims collecting 1384 soils and 464 rock samples and also carried out ground geophysics (VLF and MAG). Fifteen BGM core holes were drilled on the GOZ claims totaling 1546 metres. In 1991 Noranda and Frontier collected 200 rock, 275 soil and 15 silt samples and they drilled a further 15 holes totaling 2087 metres. Following the 1991 program, Noranda terminated their option on the RDN claims and allowed their GOZ claims to lapse. The GOZ lapsed and were restaked as RDN 5-8 and 11-13 claims in 1995.
In 1989, Skeena Resources Ltd. staked a large claim package (the Arctic claims) on the north fork of More Creek. In 1990, Skeena carried out reconnaissance silt sampling and mapping/prospecting traverses (collecting 56 silts, 169 soils and 34 rocks). Skeena’s claims were allowed to lapse and the RDN 14-18 claims were staked in 1997 to cover the Downstream showing.
In March 1990, Adrian Resources Ltd. and Skeena each staked claims between Noranda’s GOZ and Skeena’s Arctic claim groups, and contested ownership. Exploration work was done by each group that summer. Noranda optioned Skeena’s More claims and did limited sampling and ground magnetics and EM survey in 1990 and 1991. In 1991, Adrian optioned the More claims from Skeena and Noranda and carried out grid-based geological mapping and added infill soil lines. Two mineralized zones were reported from within silicified and carbonate-altered dacitic volcanics- the Main and Gem zones. The More claims lapsed in 1995 and were restaked the next day as the RDN 9 and 10 claims.
Pathfinder Resources Ltd. optioned the RDN property in 1994 and carried out reconnaissance exploration on the RDN l-6 claims. In 1995, Pathfinder performed a grid-based soil geochemical survey over the RDN 1-8 claims, collecting 574 soil and 8 rock samples. In 1996 Pathfinder carried geological mapping, prospecting (110 rocks), soil sampling (448 soils) and geophysical surveying (VLF and MAG) over the RDN l-10 claims.
In 1997, the RDN property was acquired by Rimfire Minerals Corporation and from 1997 to 1999 they carried out mapping, prospecting and soil sampling in the More grid, Cole Creek, Jungle Anomaly, Marcasite Gossan, Arctic grid, NE Downpour and Carcass grid areas. During that time 2800 soils and 494 rocks were collected; ground MAG and VLF surveys were conducted; backhoe trenches were excavated and 9 diamond-drill holes totaling 574.2 metres were completed.
In 2000, Newmont Exploration of Canada Ltd. conducted UTEM ground geophysical surveys over five areas of the RDN claims and collected 165 soil and 32 rock samples. In 2001, Newmont completed thirteen drill holes totalling 2255.82 metres, in four separate areas: the Wedge, Boundary, Sand Lake and Downpour Creek Camp zones. They also carried out an UTEM ground geophysical program that totalled 550 metres
In 2002, Barrick Gold Inc/Homestake Canada Inc. completed a drill program totalling 1125.93 metres. Seven angled NQII holes, plus one auto-wedge hole, ranging in length from 20 to 320 metres, were cored in the Jungle zone area. The ninth hole of the season was 700 metres to the northwest of the Jungle zone and targeted the stratigraphy around the Carcass Creek fault. In 2003, Barrick/Homestake collected 108 soils and 164 rock samples.
In 2004, Northgate Minerals Corporation optioned the RDN property from Rimfire Minerals Corporation and completed 2499 meters of drilling in nine holes. In 2005, Equity Engineering Ltd conducted geological work and supervised a six-hole (1470 metre) drill program on behalf of Northgate Minerals Corporation. Work was divided between the RTB silver showing discovered in 2004, and the Arctic grid (see the new MINFILE occurrences RTB and Black Bear).
The 2005 program by Northgate Minerals/Rimfire Minerals (Assessment Report 28107) produced 244 rock samples including 31 channel samples, 48 whole rock from rock and drill core samples, 2 U-Pb age dates and 1 Ar-Ar age date (pending), 3 silt samples, 579 soil samples including duplicates and blanks (555 sites), and 917 core samples including 16 duplicates. This work was done on the following:
-Blind Fault (104B 397): 1:2500 mapping, rock and channel sampling, prospecting,
-Arctic Grid: 1:2500, 1:5000 mapping, linecutting, soil and rock sampling, prospecting,
-Top /Gossan Creek Porphyry: 1:5,000 mapping, rock sampling, prospecting.
In 2005, nine holes totalling 1470.66 metres (4825 feet) of NQ core were drilled on:
-Blind Fault; 3 drill holes for a total of 707.13 metres,
- Arctic West (new MINFILE); two stratigraphic holes for a total of 684.31 metres,
- Arctic East; one attempted hole ended in overburden for a total of 79.25 metres.
The 2006 program by Northgate Minerals/Rimfire Minerals (Assessment Report 28789) consisted of including an airborne geophysical survey, diamond drilling, geological mapping and prospecting, grid and contour soil sampling, and minor reclamation work. An airborne survey using Fugro’s RESOLVE electro-magnetic-magnetometer system covered a total of 740 line kilometers in the Arctic area of the property in one contiguous block. Maps displaying magnetic, resistivity and conductor data were produced. Diamond drilling was done in the Arctic Grid West area, concentrated along the contact between mudstone and rhyolite units, which was identified in 2005. Four holes, totaling 1350.05 metres of NQ core, were drilled.
The 2006 program produced 178 rock samples including 98 chip samples, 35 whole rock from
rock and drill core samples, 16 silt samples, 331 soil samples including duplicates and blanks (323 sites), and 965 core samples including 26 duplicates. This field work was conducted in two main areas on the following:
-Arctic Grid-More Creek Canyon: 1:5,000, mapping, rock sampling, prospecting, and grid soil sampling,
-Mirko Grid and North RDN: 1:5,000 mapping, rock sampling, prospecting, grid and contour soil sampling.
In 2007, Northgate relinquished its option on the portion of the RDN property without Hazelton Group stratigraphy. Rimfire split this property up from their RDN property and renamed it the Grizzly Property to be owned 100 per cent by Rimfire. This portion called the Grizzly property (104G 079) was optioned by Rimfire to Inmet Mining Corporation in January 2008.
