The Joh 12 showing is located east of Johanson Lake, approximately 163 kilometres northeast of Hazelton. The Joh 2 (094D 167) showing is 3.2 kilometres to the south.
The area is underlain by upper Triassic Takla Group volcanic rocks. These comprise porphyritic andesite and banded tuff. An Early Jurassic monzonite stock related to the Hogem Plutonic Suite intrudes the Takla volanics, the contact of which is at or near the Joh 12 occurrence.
Mineralization was discovered in 3 main areas on the Joh property. These correspond to large magnetic highs and an intrusive-volcanic contact zone. The mineralization is located in the northeast corner of the Joh 12 claim. Malachite and minor chalcopyrite occur in fractures in the monzonite. The 2 other areas are the Joh 2 (094D 167) and the Joh 1 (094D 168) showings. A selected sample, across 10 centimetres of malachite filled fractures, assayed 0.3329 per cent copper and 0.047 gram per tonne gold (Sample NR01, Assessment Report 21781). These fractures occurred in chloritic and potassically altered monzonite.
In 1991, Swannell Minerals Corporation requested Reliance Geological Services Inc to carry out an exploration program consisting of rock, stream sediment and heavy mineral sampling surveys, and geological mapping on the JOH property. The claims were registered in the name of Major General Resources Ltd and under option to Swannell. The Joh property comprised five contiguous mineral claims consisting of 98 units, totaling 2450 hectares in area. Exploration results identified copper/gold mineralization in rocks in three areas of the Joh property. Each of the three areas corresponds to a magnetic high and intrusive-volcanic contact zones. Five rock samples taken from the Joh 12 area were significant in copper.
