The Thane Creek mercury occurrence is located on the south side of Thane Creek, 57 kilometres northwest of the community of Germansen Landing.
Cinnibar mineralization is reported near Thane Creek in carbonate altered fault zones cutting the Upper Triassic Takla Group (Geological Survey of Canada Memoir 274, page 203). The fault zones are part of, or are related to, a major northwest trending set which cuts all rock types. The Takla rocks consist of maroon to grey basalt, agglomerate, tuff, tuffaceous siltstone, and argillite of the Upper Triassic Plughat Mountain Formation.
There is no recorded exploration on this ground until 1990 when Lysander Gold Corporation conducted reconnaissance-style geologic and geochemical surveys on its Cat 13, 14 and 15 claims that contain the mercury occurrence. Lysander failed to locate any economic sulphide mineralization. In 1992, Placer Dome Inc. optioned the Cat claims from Lysander. An exploration program consisted of 20 kilometres of grid installation, a 4.4 kilometre reconnaissance contour line, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and various geophysical surveys. Geophysical surveying consisted of 10.3 kilometres of induced polarization, 10.3 kilometres of VLF-EM and 10.8 kilometres of ground magnetics. A total of 323 soil samples, 2 silt samples and 10 rock samples were collected. Some reconnaissance mapping and sampling was done in the area of the Thane Creek mercury showing (Assessment Report 22722); no indication is given that the showing was rediscovered.
A related work history of the area is discussed in Cat Mountain (094C 069) located 5.9 kilometres south of the Thane Creek showing.
