The Coulter/Promise anomaly is located on Coulter Creek, approximately 6 kilometres west of the community of Wells.
The area is underlain by the Paleozoic age Barkerville terrane. The lithology is part of the Snowshoe Group and is described as a micaceous phyllite or green slate with minor limestone.
In 2001, a grid was established by Consolidated Gold City Mining Corp. to conduct a broad based biogeochemical sampling survey. Anomalies were detected during that program. In 2006, Merit Mining selectively followed up on several biogeochemical anomalies by way of a more detailed soil sampling program. The grid was coincident with a large airborne potassium and magnetic anomaly. A 150 by 200 metre gold soil geochemical anomaly was identified, with values averaging 30 parts per billion gold, and attaining a maximum of value 1885 parts per billion gold (Assessment Report 28945).
