Capsule Geology

The Dufferin workings are located along Grouse Creek, 750 metres south of the Hard Cash adit on Lot 9564 (093H 052), about 6.5 kilometres south of Barkerville.

The Dufferin showing comprises a quartz vein cutting dark grey phyllites and quartzites of the Upper Proterozoic-Paleozoic Snowshoe Group along upper Grouse Creek. The vein is about 1.8 metres wide, strikes 295 degrees and dips 70 degrees north, and is mineralized with pyrite and locally galena.

The vein was explored with an exploration adit in the 1800s, and was subsequently located and described by Amos Bowman (Geological Survey of Canada Annual Report 1887-88), who reported that an assay sample of vein material yielded 70 grams per tonne gold and 10 grams per tonne silver. In 2000, the Dufferin adit dumpsite was identified and a pyrite-rich quartz sample collected from the dump yielded 14.83 grams per tonne gold and 10.2 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 26567, Sample 23814).

The Lord Dufferin workings are located along Grouse Creek 750 metres south of the Hard Cash adit (093H 052, Lot 9564). Here a two metre wide vein of white quartz carrying minor amounts of disseminated pyrite strikes northwest across the creek. On the west side of the creek an adit was driven along the vein for 10 metres to where it was cut off by a fault. On the east side of the creek the vein was followed with an adit for 55 metres; near the face the vein became very narrow and split up into stringers. A 1926 government report states that a 10 ton sample of the quartz carried $7 - $8 per ton in gold (which is equivalent to 0.387 ounces gold per ton at the gold price then of $20.67 per ounce) and was shipped to the stamp mill in Barkerville (Assessment Reports 24135, 26567).

In 1987, Bonadventure Resources Ltd. conducted exploration on their Mount Proserpine property which covered the Dufferin showing. In 1995, A.G. Troup completed prospecting, rock chip sampling, geochemical sampling and a magnetometer survey over the Grouse Creek property. In 2000, a 25 square kilometre geological bedrock survey was conducted on part of the Antler-Nugget Mountain Property which covers the Dufferin workings.

During 2000 through 2008, Golden Cariboo Resources Ltd. completed programs of prospecting, geological mapping, geochemical (rock, soil, moss and stream sediment) sampling, ground magnetic and self potential surveys, trenching and 60 diamond drill holes, totalling 28,710.0 metres on the area as the Golden Cariboo property. A complete summary of exploration programs can be found at the Cariboo Hudson (MINFILE 093A 091) occurrence.

In 2005, a rock sample (E30840) from an approximately 2-metre wide quartz vein with 30 to 40 per cent massive pyrite-galena-sphalerite 6.05 grams per tonne gold, 872.0 grams per tonne silver, 23.6 per cent lead and 0.20 per cent zinc (Brown, J. (2009-01-28): Technical Report on the 2000-2008 Exploration Programs on the Golden Cariboo Project).

In 2006, a sample (E104630) of limestone/marble with sulphide replacement bandings and/or clots including pyrite and galena located on the east side of the upper Grouse Creek assayed 3.25 grams per tonne gold gold, 101 grams per tonne silver and 1.25 per cent lead, while a sample (E104262) of galena-bearing quartz vein assayed 94.9 grams per tonne silver and 5.28 per cent lead (Brown, J. (2009-01-28): Technical Report on the 2000-2008 Exploration Programs on the Golden Cariboo Project).
