The Hazeltine Flats placer occurrence is located 12 kilometres southeast of Barkerville, near where Nugget Gulch enters Antler Creek. From 1906 to 1940, Nugget Gulch has been worked by various operators with leases and workings extending some 100 metres up the gulch.

In the Antler Creek area, placer gold is mostly hosted near or on top of bedrock in postglacial fluvial gravels. Bedrock comprises mid-Paleozoic Downey succession (Snowshoe Group) chloritic schist, marble and phyllite. The auriferous gravels are covered by 1 to 5 metres of barren fine-grained alluvium.

During 1906 to 1940, the workings on Nugget Gulch, following a postglacial channel, produced a total of 412,800 grams of gold. Prior to this, work was concentrated on a preglacial or tertiary channel which returned a reported 2.85 million grams of gold (Property File Chevron - Steiner, R., 1975). The claims were restaked in the 1970s and a sampling program in 1973 on a portion of relocated preglacial (Tertiary) channel yielded 1204 grams of gold from 4.6 cubic metres of gravel (Property File Chevron - Steiner, R., 1975). In 1975, about 15 metres of test drilling over 5 holes and a hand-cut trench was completed on the preglacial channel. A sample from drilling yielded 199 grams of gold per cubic metre from the lower 0.30 metre. A 0.0283 cubic metre sample, from the trench, returned 3.209 grams of gold (Property File Chevron - Steiner, R., 1975).

Bulk sampling at Hazeltine Flats (on the east side of Antler Creek) has revealed a probable placer gold reserve of 9158 grams in three zones in shallow postglacial gravels along a small bench. A total of 632 grams of gold was recovered from 666 cubic metres of auriferous gravels at this site (Assessment Report 24604).

Intermittent gold production from Antler Creek between 1876 and 1945 totalled 33,652 ounces (1,046,577 grams)(Bulletin 28).

In 1860, gold discoveries were made on Keithley and Antler creeks. Mining of gravel much lower in grade than that which could have been worked profitably by other known methods began with the introduction of hydralicking to the Cariboo region in about 1880. From time to time attempts have been made in various places to operate bucket-line or suction dredges, but the Kafue bucket-line dredge, which operated on Antler Creek from 1925 to 1928, is the only one that came close to being economically successful.
