Capsule Geology

The Eaglet deposit is located within Early Mississippian Quesnel Lake granitic orthogneiss at its contact with Late Proterozoic biotite-garnet metapelite of the Snowshoe Group. The orthogneiss is injected with dikes and irregular bodies of aplite, pegmatite and normal-textured granite. Along its structurally modified intrusive northern contact are abundant xenoliths of garnet-biotite metapelite and garnet amphibolites. Contact relationships exposed in Barrett Creek canyon show an easterly strike and shallow northerly dip. The salmon pink colour of gneiss blocks on muckpiles and in most of the drillcore points to widespread potassic alteration and major-element mobility. With exception of the Barrett Creek canyon and a few scattered bedrock exposures along the access road from the Quesnel Lake to adits 1 and 2, the deposit is covered by a continuous blanket of overburden, which varies in thickness from 1.2 to 33.2 metres (averaging 11.3 metres), as documented from 63 drillhole logs.

Fluorspar mineralization was first discovered on the property by H.H. Forester in 1946. In 1966-67, Canex Aerial Exploration Limited performed trenching, percussion drilling and some mill testing. Exploration between 1971 and 1985 included 126 surface diamond-drill holes totalling 19,687 metres, together with 9 underground horizontal diamond-drill holes (from adit 1) totalling 1525 metres. In addition, two adits, No. 1 of 292 metres and No. 2 of 373 metres were driven to test the mineralization underground. Most of the collected samples were analysed only for fluorspar (CaF2), some also for silver. Two samples (Nos. 18018 and 18019) returned values of 223.0 grams per tonne silver and 13.0 per cent lead and 277.8 grams per tonne silver and 16.2 per cent lead (Property File Rimfire Robertson, A., 1983). This program covered an area 1500 metres long and 900 metres wide on a south facing forested slope between elevations of 760 and 915 metres. Past expenditures of Eaglet Mines Limited over the period 1971 to 1985 reportedly exceeded $7,000,000. The property was partly abandoned in 1991, and entirely in 1997. It was restaked in 1994 and then again in 2003 by Freeport Resources Inc. In 1994, eight 2-post mineral claims were staked to cover the previously explored mineralization and Freeport Resources Inc. took a variety of pulp samples from the 1983 diamond drilling program (189 samples) and “ribs” and “rounds” (632 samples) from adit 2 stored on the property and analysed them by ICP-MS for 31 elements. These are the first more comprehensive analytical results for this deposit. In 2003, the claims were restaked and a digital GPS survey completed. In 2007, the Q claims were staked flanking the existing claims. Work in the same year consisted of a short property visit with on-site review of historical drill core, and the muck piles of Adits 1 and 2. In addition, GPS coordinates were taken at key points to commence a database in order to translate the paper records of the historical work into a digital 3-dimensional model for a greater understanding of the deposit. Mineralogical and petrographic work was undertaken on select samples from the property. In addition, high resolution digital imagery was secured and a schematic fracture diagram prepared.

Fluorite mineralization occurs as veinlets, scattered veins and pods, and disseminated grains and crops out in sparse exposures for a distance of 400 metres westward from Barrett Creek canyon and again on the Quesnel Lake shore, a further 1600 metres further west. Exploration drilling outlined impregnations and stockwork in rather flat feldspathic zones which can attain thickness of up to 30 metres.

Molybdenite has been found in several drilling holes, on the rock pile outside of adit 1 and particularly in 373 metres long adit 2. A systematic sampling of the adit 2 walls shows Mo values reaching up to 1143 parts per million Mo in individual samples. There are sections of 155 parts per million Mo over 36 metres on the south side, 169 parts per million Mo over 42 metres directly correlating on the north side of the adit and, further to the adit end, there is 151 parts per million Mo over 9 metres and 227 parts per million Mo over 18 metres. The calculated averages for shorter sections are significantly higher. Late discovery of molybdenite in adit 2 has not been followed up by work to outline its distribution within the deposit. Molybdenite is frequently but randomly present along slickenside and gneissosity planes as groups of flakes several centimetres in size, in quartz veinlets, and as grains within crosscutting veinlets of fluorite. Six drillholes from 1983 program reanalyzed by Freeport Resources have Mo assays up to 270 parts per million. In general, the high-molybdenite areas do not overlap high-grade fluorspar mineralization.

Celestite (strontium sulphate (SrSO4)) presence is widespread, but its distribution has not been studied. The ICP values of over 10,000 parts per million Sr in individual samples are very common. Galena, sphalerite, pyrite and pyrochlore were identified as minor constituents. Gangue minerals consist of quartz, calcite, siderite, kaolinite, dickite, nakrite, very fine grained hematite and fluorapophyllite, possibly also gypsum. Chloritic, sericitic and potassic alteration are evident in the area. An age date on fluorite using the fission-track method resulted in a date of 104.6 ±6 Ma, a mica sample from aplitic granite intersected in drillhole 43-81 provided an age of 127 ±4 Ma. Indicated (probable) reserves reported by Eaglet Mines Ltd in 1984 are 24 million tonnes grading 11.5 per cent fluorite (CaF2), including 2 million tonnes grading 15 per cent CaF2 (Eaglet Mines Ltd. Annual Report 1984). This historical estimate is not compliant with NI 43-101. Size of the Mo resource has not been estimated.

In 2012 Freeport Resources Inc. released fluorospar results from adit 2, showing three generally continuous intervals of mineralization (with a combined length of 126 metres) in a faulted and folded zone with an average grade of 8.7 per cent calcium fluoride. The northeast part of this adit has coarse-grained molybdenite occurring over 70 metres (V STOCKWATCH May 1, 2012).
