Capsule Geology

The Ejas Lake (Grit) occurrence is located approximately 1 kilometre east of the eastern end of Ejas Lake and 7 kilometres south of Mahood Lake.

The area is underlain by metasedimentary rocks, including carbonate and quartzite-quartz granule conglomerate, phyllite and andalusite schists of the upper Proterozoic to Paleozoic Snowshoe Group. The rock units dip approximately 30 degrees to the southwest. These are in contact with basaltic volcanic rocks of the Devonian to Permian Fennell Formation (Slide Mountain Group) to the west and have been intruded by granitic rocks of the Cretaceous Raft Batholith to the south.

Locally, a pyritic quartz-muscovite schist contains disseminated pyrite, minor pyrrhotite and rare chalcopyrite.

In 1966, a mineralized float sample was discovered south of Maury Lake. The sample assayed 10.68 per cent lead and 950 grams per tonne silver (Property File - Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. [1985-02-01]: 1984 Final Report on the Lizard Claims).

In 1983, a 6-centimetre piece of core from the 1978 drilling program was assayed, yielding 0.7 gram per tonne gold and 13.0 grams per tonne silver from a graphitic, pyrrhotite-bearing phyllite. (Property File - Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. [1985-02-01]: 1984 Final Report on the Lizard Claims).

In 1984, a sample (AB-18550) of quartz-muscovite schist (phyllite) assayed 0.27 gram per tonne gold, whereas a sample (AB-16876) of sericitic schist assayed 0.32 gram per tonne gold and 16.7 grams per tonne silver (Property File - Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. [1985-02-01]: 1984 Final Report on the Lizard Claims).

Also at this time, a quartz vein exposed west of the southern lobe of Maury Lake yielded 0.176 per cent lead, 0.07 per cent zinc, 0.1 gram per tonne gold and 8.4 grams per tonne silver (sample AB-16838; Property File - Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. [1985-02-01]: 1984 Final Report on the Lizard Claims).

The first reported mineral exploration in the area was conducted in 1966. Aquitaine optioned the Grit claims from Barrier Reef and ran airborne electromagnetic and magnetic surveys by Aerodat in 1977. This was followed by ground geophysics over selected grids. In 1978, Barrier Reef Resources Limited drilled a single hole 475 metres north of Ejas Lake on the Grit 6 claim. The Lizard claims were staked in November 1984 by Kerr, Dawson and Associates Limited on behalf of Kidd Creek Mines. Soil sampling, geological mapping, stream sediment and rock sampling and HLEM and magnetometer surveys were conducted. At this time, the area was also examined and sampled as the Pacific claims.
