The Marino occurrence is located north of the Kilpala River, approximately 2.5 kilometres northwest of the river mouth.
The area is underlain by a thick sequence of tholeiitic basalts of the Upper Triassic Vancouver Group, Karmutsen Formation. The volcanics are intruded by granodiorite of the Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite.
The occurrence consists of a 6 metre wide area of quartz veins in the centre of an 18 metre wide northwest trending shear zone. The area of quartz veins is flanked by zones of barren calcite veining. Chloritic and sericitic alteration of the basalt host rock are associated with the shear zone. The quartz veins are from 1 to 8 centimetres wide and carry sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite.
In 1983, a high-grade sample returned 4.79 per cent zinc and 0.55 per cent copper (Assessment Report 11292, page 4).
Samples from mineralized quartz veins submitted in 1982 and 1983 returned 0.27 per cent molybdenite, 0.14 to 0.83 per cent per cent copper, 15.4 to 39.1 grams per tonne gold, 48.0 to 65.2 grams per tonne silver and 11.5 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 11543, page 1).
In 1989, a hand-picked sample (Fid 04) of vein material assayed 8 grams per tonne gold and 0.16 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 18902).
In 1990, drilling yielded values of:
------------------------------------------------------------------Drill Hole Length Copper Silver (No.) (metres) (per cent) (grams per tonne) 90DN04 5.0 0.60 6.9 90DN05 4.0 1.43 16.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
(Assessment Report 20166)
In 2012, a rock sample (KR4) of felsic rock hosting quartz veins with pyrite, chalcopyrite and malachite assayed 1.03 per cent copper and 8.1 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 33827).
Work History
In 1983, Chevron and Falconbridge completed programs of rock and soil sampling, geological mapping and ground electromagnetic surveys on the area as the Marino, Fido and Kilpala claims. In 1984, Falconbridge is reported as drilling 3 diamond drill holes on the main showing. No results are known. In 1989 and 1990, Doromin Resources completed drilling programs, totalling 125 metres. In 2012, Homegold Resources completed a program of geochemical (rock and soil) sampling and a 4.7 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the area as the Kipala property.
