The Wanokana occurrence is located in the northern headwaters of a branch of Wanokana Creek, approximately 4.2 kilometres south of the eastern end of Kains Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by northwest-trending belts of basaltic volcanics and carbonate sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Karmutsen and Quatsino formations (Vancouver Group) and mafic volcanics and sediments of the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group (Holberg volcanic unit, Nahwitti River wacke and Parson Bay Formation). These volcanic and sedimentary rocks have been intruded by granodioritic rocks of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite.

Locally, disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and magnetite are present in amygdaloidal basalts, andesites and quartz diorite. The volcanics contain quartz, calcite and K-feldspar amygdules, whereas the intrusive is generally a medium-grained grey hornblende-biotite quartz diorite.

In 1989, a sample (109750) assayed 1.18 per cent zinc, 0.226 per cent copper and 9.0 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 19180).

In 1960, BHP-Utah Mines staked the Wanokana claims and examined them the following year. In 1966, further programs of soil sampling, geological mapping and ground magnetic surveys were completed. During 1964 through 1968, Western Canada Steel Ltd. and later Cominco Ltd. completed programs of ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys, geological mapping and soil sampling on the surrounding area as the Aero and Beta claims. In 1970, a radiometric survey was completed on the area as the Ex claims.

In 1989, Caribbean Resources Corp. completed a program of stream sediment and rock sampling and geological mapping on the area as the Wanokana North property.
