The Shaw Springs Gems occurrence is located on an un-named northern tributary of the Nicoamen River, approximately 3.5 kilometres west of Nsatiscou Lake.
The area is underlain by Middle and Upper Cretaceous Spences Bridge Group (Spius Creek Formation) volcanics.
Locally, black and grey agate nodules are found in and below basalt bluffs. These consist primarily of banded agate nodules, many with plume.
During 2009 through 2014, the area was held and prospected as the Opal Slopes, Opal Summit and Opal 1-4 claims by William Amey. Numerous agate samples, along with two small samples of opal were collected from the claims.
