Capsule Geology

The Nor 30 occurrence is located approximately 900 metres west-southwest of the south end of Bluey Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by the Upper Triassic Nicola Group, which regionally consists of alkalic and calc-alkalic volcanics and intrusions of island arc origin, and which is the principal component of the Quesnel terrane in southern British Columbia (Geological Survey of Canada Maps 41-1989, 1713A). The area lies in the Central Belt or facies of the Nicola Group (after Preto, Bulletin 69). This belt of rocks mainly consists of subaerial and submarine, red or purple to green augite plagioclase porphyritic andesitic and basaltic flows, volcanic breccia and tuff, and minor argillites and limestone. The volcanics are intruded by bodies of comagmatic Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic diorite to monzonite. The area is characterized by long-lived, primarily north-striking faults and related fracturing, which originally controlled intrusion emplacement. East-striking faults are subordinate, and commonly offset intrusive contacts.

Locally, a vein of massive chalcocite, up to 13 centimetres wide, occurs in red volcanic breccia and lahar deposits of the Upper Triassic Nicola Group (Central belt, Bulletin 69). The vein is bordered by 1 metre of disseminated chalcocite. This zone has been traced along strike for approximately 100 metres. Twelve metres to the north, a wide shear zone is mineralized with chalcopyrite and pyrite. Later work (circa 2015) reports a 20-metre-long zone of strong chalcocite and minor bornite veinlets and calcite-epidote-chalcocite veins hosted in a well-bedded lithic and ash crystal tuff situated above a sequence of brick red ash and crystal tuffs, at a transition between polymictic lithic lapilli tuff and tuff breccia overlying red and green crystal tuff. Disseminated hematite is common.

Several small trenches, 340 metres west-southwest of the main showing, expose malachite and chalcopyrite in porphyritic andesite.

In 1985, seven of eight rock samples (2271 to 2273 and 2275 through 2578) collected in the immediate vicinity of the chalcocite vein and shear zone assayed 0.867 to 4.68 per cent copper with silver values of up to 37.8 grams per tonne, whereas a sample (2579), taken several hundred metres west-southwest of the previous samples, yielded 2.36 per cent copper and 177.4 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 14141, Drawing 5b).

In 1987, a rock sample (1930) from the main occurrence area yielded 1.142 per cent copper, whereas another sample (6732), taken several hundred metres to the southeast of the previous sample, yielded 1.272 per cent copper (Assessment Report 17118).

In 1996, a grab sample (28524) from a 0.1-metre-wide shear zone hosting chalcocite and malachite in an epidote- and carbonate-altered porphyritic andesite to basalt yielded 4.28 per cent copper, 60.9 grams per tonne silver and 0.31 gram per tonne gold, whereas a 1-metre chip sample (28525) from the shear zone yielded 0.78 per cent copper and 12.2 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 24522). Also at this time, a selective composite sample (28527) from a nearby ore or dump pile adjacent to a small trench or opencut yielded 6.51 per cent copper and 75.3 grams per tonne silver, whereas a selective grab sample from a small shaft or test pit located a short distance northwest of the previous samples yielded 5.34 per cent copper and 151.0 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 24522). A grab sample (28530) from another narrow (0.1 metre wide), mineralized shear zone, located several hundred metres west-southwest of the previous samples, yielded 4.85 per cent copper and 297.1 grams per tonne silver, whereas a chip sample (28531) from the shear yielded 1.67 per cent copper and 71.4 grams per tonne silver over 1 metre (Assessment Report 24522).

In 2013, a sample of chalcocite from the occurrence is reported to have dated to 215±2 million years old, and three samples (M458637, M458639 and M458641) yielded from 2.70 to 4.16 per cent copper and 49.0 to 111.0 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 36184).

Work History

The occurrence was prospected as early as 1900, with a shaft and trench being developed around this time.

In 1956, Fidelity Uranium Mines Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping and trenching on the area as the Nor claims.

In 1972, Noranda Mining and Exploration Inc. completed a program of geological mapping, trenching and ground and airborne geophysical surveys on the area as the Bim, Boss, J, Lo, Gail and Tight claim groups of the Adonis property.

In 1985, Vanco Explorations Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping and geochemical (rock and soil) sampling on the area as the Bloo, Climax and Thor claims. In 1987, a further program of rock and soil sampling was completed on the claims.

In 1990, Rayrock Yellowknife Resources Inc. and MineQuest Exploration Associated Ltd. completed a 56.2 line-kilometre induced polarization survey on the area immediately south of the occurrence as the Zig 1-4 and Zul 1-3 claims. In 1996 and 1997, Len Harris and later Matrix Energy Inc. completed programs of prospecting and rock sampling on the area as the Tom Cat and Climax claims.

In 2002, Gary Brown prospected and completed a 12.6 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the area as the Bluey 2 claim. In 2004, Copper Hill Exploration Corp. completed a program of geological mapping and photo-geological interpretation on the area as the Ketchan property.

In 2011, Moag Copper Gold Resources Inc. completed a program of soil sampling on the area as part of the Ketchan property. In 2013, West Cirque Resources Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping and rock sampling on the area as the Aspen Grove property. During 2014 through 2016, KZD Aspen Grove Holding Ltd. and Kaizen Discovery Inc. completed programs of prospecting and geological mapping on the Aspen Grove property.
