The Wally 3 occurrence is located on the north end of Sechelt Peninsula and approximately 500 metres northwest of the north end of Waugh Lake.
Regionally, the area is underlain by a series of northwest-trending volcanic and sedimentary rocks comprised of basaltic volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Karmutsen and Quatsino formations (Vancouver Group); argillite, greywacke, wacke and conglomerate turbidites of the Lower to Middle Jurassic Bowen Island Group and volcanic and marine sedimentary rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Gambier Group, which form roof pendants that have been intruded by diorite and quartz diorite of the Jurassic to Cretaceous Coast Plutonic Complex.
Locally, a sulphide-bearing quartz vein (Wally 3 Vein) is developed in an Upper Jurassic hornblende biotite granodiorite, within the western margin of the Jurassic to Tertiary Coast Plutonic Complex. The vein strikes 150 degrees for at least 12.5 metres and dips 56 degrees southwest. Widths vary from 0.65 to 1.8 metres. The vein is truncated to the northwest and possibly also to the southeast by strike-slip faults.
The vein is comprised of chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite as disseminations, pods and bands up to 0.4 metre thick in a gangue of vuggy, milky white quartz. Total sulphide content varies from 8 to 20 per cent. These sulphides also extend into the wallrock, which exhibits sericite-epidote-chlorite alteration up to 0.3 metre from the vein.
In 1985, two grab samples of the vein yielded an average of 6.12 grams per tonne gold, 98.7 grams per tonne silver and 4.40 per cent copper (Samples 1 and 2; Assessment Report 14264). Also at this time, two drillcore samples, taken at approximately 8.69 and 9.45 metres down hole, yielded trace and greater than 0.025 per cent molybdenum, both greater than 1.00 per cent copper, greater than 100.0 and 37.0 grams per tonne silver with 1.91 and 3.64 grams per tonne gold, respectively (Assessment Report 14264). Later that year, hole DDH-17 on the vein zone yielded 1.1 grams per tonne gold and 3.8 grams per tonne silver over 1.5 metres, and hole DDH-16 yielded 0.23 gram per tonne gold over 5.5 metres (Assessment Reports 14736 and 15577).
In 1986, a chip sample (B039) of the Wally 3 vein yielded 3.6 grams per tonne gold over 0.65 metre (Assessment Report 15577).
In 1989, sampling of the Wally 3 vein yielded values up to 3.9 grams per tonne gold, 101.8 grams per tonne silver, 3.28 per cent copper and 2.62 per cent molybdenum (Assessment Report 18548).
A second quartz vein (Wally 3a Vein), striking 130 degrees for 3 metres and dipping 30 to 50 degrees southwest, outcrops 150 metres south of the previous vein, within hornblende biotite quartz diorite. The vein pinches and swells to a width of 0.3 metre. Pyrite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite occur along fractures and as disseminations in the vein.
In 1986, a grab (603701) sample from the Wally 3a vein assayed 0.45 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 15577).
In 1989, three samples (900021-900023) of the Wally 3a vein yielded from 0.27 to 0.51 gram per tonne gold, 14.2 to 18.8 grams per tonne silver, 0.002 to 0.058 per cent molybdenum and 0.06 to 1.62 per cent copper (Assessment Report 18548).
Another quartz vein (BL 2 L500 25W) is located several hundred metres east of the main vein and comprises a 0.5-metre-wide quartz vein hosting pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena. The vein strikes 310 degrees with a vertical dip.
In 1984, a grab sample (BL 2 L500 25W) from the vein assayed 0.30 gram per tonne gold, 4.2 grams per tonne silver and 0.10 per cent copper (Assessment Report 12451).
Work History
In 1983, Chalice Mining Inc. conducted a program of prospecting, geological mapping, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling and a 3.0 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the area as the Bacon and Wally claim groups. The following year, a rock and soil sampling program was conducted on the Bacon and Wally claim groups. In 1985, Chalice Mining Inc. completed a program of prospecting, trenching, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling, an induced polarization survey and 98.8 metres of diamond drilling in three holes on the Wally 3 and Chalice 1 claims. The following year, a further program of geological mapping, geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling and a 5.3 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey was completed on the Wally 3 and Bacon 3 claims. In 1988 and 1989, Seabear Venture Corp., on behalf of Chalice Mining Inc., conducted programs of geological mapping, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling, trenching and a 11.6 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the Bacon 3, Wally 3 and Skookum claims of the Bacon property.
In 1993, a prospecting program and a 3.62 line-kilometre self-potential survey was conducted on the area as the Windancer and Taj claim groups. In 1995, Menika Mining Ltd. completed a program of prospecting and a 13.2 line-kilometre self-potential survey on the Windancer, Taj and JR claims of the Ruby Group. In 1996, four diamond drill holes, totalling 725.6 metres, were completed by Charles R. Boitard on the area as the Ruby 3 claim. The following year, a further four diamond drill holes, totalling 527.6 metres, were completed on the Ruby 1-3 claims. No significant intercepts were reported in either drill programs.
