The Oktwanch occurrence is located on steep east facing slopes, west of the Oktwanch River, approximately 23 kilometres northwest of the town of Gold River.
The area is underlain by Upper Triassic Vancouver Group Karmutsen Formation rocks which have been intruded by granodiorite of the Muchalat Batholith of the Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite.
Locally, the Karmust Formation is comprised of pillow lava, basalt and a 3 metre wide interbedded band of limestone that has been altered to garnet epidote skarn near the intrusive contact. Mineralization occurs along the contact between volcanic rocks and the limestone. Three lenses of massive magnetite with garnet epidote skarn are present. The largest of these lenses is 27 metres long and 1 metre wide, and contains traces of chalcopyrite.
Several 30 to 37 centimetre wide pods of massive chalcopyrite-pyrite-pyrrhotite are also present in garnet epidote skarn along the contact. This mineralization occurs over a distance of 3.6 metres before being obscured by overburden. Barren exposures along strike limit the potential mineralization here to less than 15 metres. Assessment Report 743 also reports minor disseminated chalcopyrite with pyrite in quartz-filled interpillow spaces.
In 1965, Empire Development completed a program of prospecting and geological mapping. In 1993, Noranda completed a program of airborne geophysical surveys on the area as the Much 4 claim, part of the Muchalat property. In 1995 and 1996 the Oktwanch area was prospected, stream sampled and rock sampled by Westmin Resources Limited, operating for Doromin Resources Ltd., as part of the Dragon property.
