The Mohawk occurrence is located on southwest facing slopes, east of the Tsowwin River and at an elevation of approximately 290 metres.
The area is underlain by Upper Triassic Vancouver Group volcanics and sediments comprised of Karmutsen Formation basalts and the Quatsino and Parson Bay formations carbonates and clastics. Granodiorite of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite and Eocene Catface or Mount Washington Intrusions has intruded the Vancouver Group rocks.
Locally, a 30 centimetre quartz vein fissure filling is hosted by Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group fragmental andesite. Slicken-sliding and shearing are evident. The structure strikes 035 degrees and dips 50 to 80 degrees southeast. The vein, or possibly sheeted veins, exhibit combed and banded textures. Finely disseminated pyrite is present. Alteration along the shear zone consists of silicification, carbonatization and sericitization.
In 1984, a 75 centimetre channel sample across the portal width of the upper adit, that include the vein and its alteration envelope, yielded values to 1.08 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 13806). In 2007, sampling of vein from the upper and lower adits yielded from 0.209 to 1.045 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 29150).
The Mohawk prospect was first staked in 1939. In the early 1940’s, two adits were drifted to explore the vein. A 15 metre adit follows the vein while another of 39.5 metres attempted to intersect the vein from a lower elevation. In 1984, the area was prospected as the Vig I-II claim. In 1987, Cardinal Mineral Corporation completed a program geological mapping and rock, silt and soil sampling. In 2007 and 2008, Silverlake Capital completed programs of geochemical sampling and geological mapping on the area. During 2009 through 2013, Homegold Resources completed programs of prospecting, historical literature reviews and air photo interpretations on the area as part of the Head Bay property.
In 2012, Canadian Dehua International Mines Group Inc. completed air photo interpretation on their Head Bay Property, covering the Glengarry and Elaine past producers, the Rob Roy, Head Bay and Vivian prospects, and the Mohawk, Middle Quarry, Upper Quarry and North Tsowwin showings. A 2015 exploration program on the Head Bay property included limited rock sampling in the Mohawk area.
