The Ax occurrence is located at an elevation of approximately 1300 metres on a south-facing slope, approximately 1 kilometre north of the east end of South Barriere Lake.

The area is underlain by metasediments and metavolcanics of the Devonian or older part of the Eagle Bay Formation. A lower, mainly volcanic unit, consists of greenstone, derived from mafic volcanics. An upper, mainly sedimentary unit, consists of sericite-quartz phyllite, limestone and quartzite. The formation strikes from 070 to 160 degrees and dips from 5 degrees to 40 degrees northeast.

Mineralization occurs along the contact between the limestone and underlying phyllites. The phyllites are graphitic close to the contact which is often marked by a layer of soft, light-grey clay gouge. The contact zone is mineralized with veins and pods of quartz, up to 2 metres thick containing sparse to abundant pyrite and occasionally galena and chalcopyrite.

A second zone of minor mineralization is reported approximately 2.6 kilometres to the east-southeast on the former Hut 6 claim and comprises a siliceous schist to phyllite and quartzite hosting limonite-stained quartz veins with minor galena, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Another zone of similar mineralization is reported approximately 1 kilometre to the east of the previous zone.

In 1987, a sample (875067) from the second zone yielded 0.102 per cent lead and 3.9 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 17239).

Work History

In 1984, Zone Petroleum Corp. completed a program of geological mapping and geochemical (rock and soil) sampling on the area as the Ax claims.

In 1985, Omni Resources Inc. completed an airborne electromagnetic and magnetic survey on the area immediately south.

During 1985 through 1987, Berglynn Resources Ltd. completed programs of geological mapping, prospecting, geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling, a 2.8 line-kilometre ground electromagnetic survey and an airborne magnetic-electromagnetic survey on the area immediately east as the Hut claims.

In 1988, Zone Petroleum Corp. completed a further program of soil sampling and prospecting on the Ax claims.
