Capsule Geology

The Stan barite occurrence is located on a steep, north-facing slope, 2.5 kilometres north east of Mount Pedley at an elevation of 1800 metres.

The area is underlain by greyish-brown, massive and brittle dolomites of the Middle Ordovician-Silurian Beaverfoot-Brisco Formation.

Locally, dolomites hosts white, coarse- grained barite veins carrying sphalerite and galena. These rocks strike east with gentle dips of 20 to 40 degrees north. A barite-cemented dolomite breccia zone with many branches and off-shoots, strikes east with a steep dip to the north-northwest and can be traced over 460 metres. Three main zones are exposed over a strike length of 150 metres. The upper area of the main zone is approximately 1 metre wide over a 20 metre vertical; the middle zone varies from 0.5 to 4.5 metres wide and the lower zone is 1 to 2 metres wide. More barite outcrops are noted to the south of the main zone. One sample has a specific gravity of 3.7 and contained 32.79 per cent barium and 1.35 per cent lead with anomalous zinc and mercury (Open File 1997-16, page 66).

In 1983, a resource estimate, based on mapping of the barite exposures, of 51,300 tonnes of probable ore and 117,000 tonnes of possible ore was reported (Assessment Report 35086).

In 1976, Chevron Standard staked the Stan and Fly claims. In 1981, the area was staked as the AB claims. During 1982 and 1983, Barwell Resources Ltd. of Calgary produced 15,120 tonnes of raw barite and 9,000 tonnes of processed barite from this locality. The barite was processed at its Windermere plant. In 2004, the area was prospected by Tiger Ridge Resources. In 2014, Voyageur Industrial Minerals completed a geochemical sampling program.
