The Jim 4 showing is located approximately 2.1 kilometres south-southwest of Jim Smith Lake.

The area is situated on the eastern limb of a localized, north- plunging anticline within sediments of the Helikian Middle Aldridge Formation (Purcell Supergroup).

Locally, traces of galena are found within a Proterozoic Moyie Intrusions diorite sill which intrudes Helikian Middle Aldridge Formation (Purcell Supergroup) clastic sediments. Outcropping Aldridge strata strike northwest and dip 10 to 15 degrees northeast. An adit is also present near the occurrence.

In 1966, Rimrock Minerals completed a 55.7 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey in the area (Assessment Report 895). In 1966 and 1967, Placid Oil completed a program of geological mapping, a 160.0-line-kilometre induced polarization survey, a 113.6-line-kilometre ground magnetic survey, and a 20.8-line-kilometre ground electromagnetic survey in the area (Assessment Reports 863, 1043, 1174, 1207). In 1978, Cominco completed a program of geological mapping (Assessment Report 7087). In 1982 and 1983, a percussion drill hole (V82-2), totalling 158.5 metres, was continued with diamond drill hole (V-83-1), totalling 207.0 metres, on the Vine 39 claim (Assessment Reports 10220, 11899).

In 2013/2014, PJX Resources Inc began a large program of gravity and magnetic geophysical surveying to detect dense subsurface features (Assessment Reports 34082, 34937, 35416). The gravity survey extended 10 kilometres beyond the West Basin property claim boundaries encompassing several MINFILE occurrences including the Jim 4 (Figure 8, Assessment Report 34082).
