Capsule Geology

The Granite Creek occurrence is located at an elevation of approximately 1250 metres, near the east bank of Granite Creek, and approximately 2.2 kilometres south-southwest of the town site of Cassiar.

Regionally, the area is underlain by quartz arenite sedimentary rocks of the Lower Cambrian Boya Formation (Atan Group), limestone, marble and calcareous sedimentary rocks of the Lower Cambrian Rosella Formation (Atan Group), limestone, slate, siltstone and argillite of the Ordovician to Silurian Road River Group, calcareous sedimentary rocks of the McDame Group, fine clastic sedimentary rocks of the Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian Earn Group and basaltic volcanic rocks of the Mississippian Slide Mountain Complex. Granitic intrusive rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Cassiar Batholith are exposed to the west.

Locally, a 1-metre-wide vein outcrops in recrystallized white to buff marble of the Lower Cambrian Rosella Formation (Atan Group). Mineralization consists of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and magnetite with siderite gangue. The limestone beds strike approximately north and dip 70 degrees east. The occurrence lies adjacent to the north-trending Marble Creek fault.

In 1979, a grab sample assayed 1.4 per cent lead, 0.63 per cent zinc, 0.12 per cent tin, 57 grams per tonne silver and 1.0 gram per tonne gold over 3.02 metres (Assessment Report 7912).

In 1980, a 3.02 metre intersection (drillhole 80-2) of massive sulphides assayed 14 per cent zinc, 0.1 per cent lead, 11.66 grams per tonne silver and 0.03 per cent tin (Assessment Report 9262).

In 1996, a rock sample (FR96-04) assayed 2.95 per cent lead, 9.90 per cent zinc and 108 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 24707).

In 2002, a chip sample (7806) from the Granite Creek zone yielded 0.56 per cent zinc, 1.28 per cent lead, 58.4 grams per tonne silver and 0.6 gram per tonne gold over 0.7 metre (Assessment Report 27203).

In 2003, trench TR-03-7 exposed the Granite Creek zone over a width of 2 metres and a length of 10 metres along a 135-degree trend and 70 degrees northeast dip. A chip sample assayed 6.2 per cent lead, 6.2 per cent zinc, 263 grams per tonne silver and 0.5 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 27337).

In 2005, drillhole CA05-4 traced the mineralized zone, previous exposed in a trench, 40 metres to the southeast and yielded 0.24 per cent lead, 1.69 per cent zinc and 54.3 grams per tonne silver over 0.7 metres of massive pyrrhotite (Assessment Report 28052).

Another zone of mineralization, referred to as the Waterfall zone, is reported at an elevation of approximately 1315 metres in Marble Creek and approximately 500 metres southeast of the Granite Creek occurrence. The zone comprises a 10-centimetre-wide fracture filling of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, siderite.

In 2002, a sample (7845) of oxidized float from a historical trench located 150 metres east of the Waterfall zone assayed 20.5 per cent lead, 1.5 per cent zinc and 612 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 27203).

Work history

In 1959, Totem Minerals Inc. completed a 238.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic and electromagnetic survey on the area as the Vines claims. In 1969, Chapparal Mines Ltd. and Coast Silver Mines Ltd. completed a 486.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic survey on the area.

In 1979 and 1980, Shell Canada Resources Limited conducted an exploration program directed toward evaluating the tin potential of known showings and to outline favourable areas for additional mineralization. The property was geologically mapped and sampled; approximately 66 line-kilometres were cut in three grids over which magnetic, induced polarization and shoot-back electromagnetic surveys were run; and a reconnaissance geochemical survey was completed. Approximately 600 metres of diamond drilling was completed in seven holes. Five holes were drilled to test the Granite Creek occurrence, and other isolated geophysical anomalies previously untested.

In 1996, Pacific Bay Minerals conducted an exploration program, which consisted of prospecting, grid-controlled soil sampling and 270 metres of reverse circulation drilling in one hole. A total of 9 rock grab samples, 444 soil samples, 14 panned samples and 15 stream silt samples were taken. During 1998 through 2008, Eveready Resources Corporation completed programs of geological mapping, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling, trenching and three diamond drill holes on the occurrence and area as the Cassiar property. In 2014, BC Moly Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping on the Storie property.
