Capsule Geology

A portion of the Lang Creek mineralization outcrops directly on Lang Creek, which empties into Vines Lake approximately 2.6 kilometres to the southeast.

Regionally, the area is underlain by quartz arenite sedimentary rocks of the Lower Cambrian Boya Formation (Atan Group), limestone, marble and calcareous sedimentary rocks of the Lower Cambrian Rosella Formation (Atan Group), limestone, slate, siltstone and argillite of the Ordovician to Silurian Road River Group, calcareous sedimentary rocks of the McDame Group, fine clastic sedimentary rocks of the Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian Earn Group and basaltic volcanic rocks of the Mississippian Slide Mountain Complex. Granitic intrusive rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Cassiar Batholith are exposed to the west.

Locally, a shallow-dipping, conformable, massive sulphide lens up to 2 metres thick occurs in cherty argillite interbedded with greenstone of the Mississippian Slide Mountain Complex. Mineralization consists of pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, marcasite and chalcocite. Malachite and azurite occur in patches on outcrops.

To the north of the showing along the same stratigraphic horizon are several patches of malachite staining with disseminations of chalcopyrite and chalcocite; no other sulphide lens were associated with the disseminated mineralization.

Work History

The Lang Creek showing was drilled by Cominco in the late 1950s following a rotary field electromagnetic survey flown by Werner Gren that showed the showing to be coincident with a large conductive trend. Cominco outlined a 27 000 tonne, 1-metre-thick massive sulphide body grading 1.52 per cent copper and 0.90 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 07912).

In 1959, Totem Minerals Inc. completed a 238.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic and electromagnetic survey on the area as the Vines claims. In 1969, Chapparal Mines Ltd. and Coast Silver Mines Ltd. completed a 486.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic survey on the area.

Crown Point Exploration Ltd. conducted magnetic and electromagnetic surveys over untested conductors during 1964 through 1967. Their work failed to find any additional mineralization; however, the work did delimit the mineralization outlined by Cominco along strike. The showing remains untested at depth and several untested conductive zones lie to the northeast which could represent displaced portions of the mineralization.

In 1978, a sample across 1.0 metre of the massive sulphide lens assayed 1.7 grams per tonne gold, 36 grams per tonne silver, 1.84 per cent copper, 0.12 per cent lead and 0.77 per cent zinc (Fieldwork 1978, page 57).

During 1979 through 1981, Shell Canada Resources Ltd. completed programs of geological mapping, geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling and ground geophysical (magnetic, electromagnetic and induced polarization) surveys on the area. Geophysical surveys completed over the potential strike extent of the showing outlined formational conductors substantiated by surface geology. Since the indicated grade of the showing is low and no possible sulphide conductors have been outlined, further exploration of the zone was not warranted at the time (Assessment Report 9548).

In 1984 and 1985, Erickson Gold Mines Ltd. completed programs of geological mapping, trenching and geochemical (rock and soil) sampling program on the area.

In 1996, Cartaway Resources Corp. completed a 3678.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic survey on the area as the Hot Tip property.

During 1998 through 2004, Eveready Resources Corporation completed programs of geological mapping, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling and trenching on the area as the Cassiar property. In 2005, Eveready Resources Corp. completed seven diamond drill holes, totalling 927.1 metres, and minor rock sampling on the Cassiar property, including one drillhole on the Lang Creek occurrence. The step-out drillhole (CA05-07) intercepted zones of significant alteration and minor chalcopyrite.

During 2006 through 2008, Eveready Resources Corp. completed minor program of rock and soil sampling on the Cassiar property. During 2008 through 2010, Hawthorne Gold Corp., later China Minerals Mining Corp., completed regional programs of geological mapping, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling and 11 657 line-kilometres of airborne magnetic, radiometric and electromagnetic surveys on the area immediately east as the Cassiar Gold property.

In 2014, BC Moly Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping on the Storie property. In 2019, Margaux Resources completed a program of prospecting, geological mapping and rock sampling on the area immediately east as the Cassiar Gold property. In 2020, Cassiar Gold Corp. completed a program of regional photogeological interpretation, prospecting and rock sampling on the Cassiar Gold property.
