Garnet and sillimanite occur in a number of localities in the Douglas Channel-Hectate Strait area (Geological Survey of Canada, Paper 70-41, Figure 10). In particular, garnet and sillimanite occur east of Kiltuish Inlet and along the Kiltuish River. The strata is part of the Central Gneiss Complex and is comprised mainly of Permian and/or older metasediments. Along the east side of the Kiltuish Inlet is an 8 kilometre long zone, striking north-northwest, which is underlain by schists which host abundant garnet and commonly silli- manite (Area 3, Figure 10, Open File 1988-26).
