Capsule Geology

The Mount Selwyn occurrence is located on a northwest-trending ridge, east of Colin Creek and approximately 5 kilometres northwest of Mount Selwyn.

Regionally, the area is underlain by greenstone and greenschist metamorphic rocks of the Neoproterozoic Misinchinka Group or Miette Group, dolomitic middle Cambrian carbonate rocks and undivided sedimentary rocks of the Cambrian to Ordovician Kechika Group.

Locally, quartzites are reported to host gold values.

In 1923, 30 samples from the occurrence area are reported to have yielded an average of approximately 69.5 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 17071).

In 1935, approximately 400 samples are reported to have been collected and yielded an average of approximately 6.8 grams per tonne gold, whereas the following year 26 samples are reported to have averaged approximately 16.3 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 17071).

In 1980, diamond drilling is reported to have yielded up to 0.9 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 9183).

In 1988, drilling yielded up to 0.3 gram per tonne gold over 0.9 metre in hole 87-3 (Assessment Report 17071).

Work History

The area was originally staked by Joe Coffee in 1899. By 1923, the Peace River Mining and Milling Company had acquired the Crown-granted mineral claims and conducted a program of test pitting, trenching, sampling and a small bulk sample; however, no gold was recovered. In 1935 and 1936, the area was prospected and sampled by George McAllister and Robert Hamilton, respectively.

In 1980, Alina International Industries Ltd. completed five diamond drill holes, totalling 455 metres, on the Selwyn group of claims. The following year, a further program of geological mapping, rock sampling and two diamond drill holes, totalling 352.6 metres, were completed. In 1988, Alina International completed three diamond drill holes, totalling 1076.5 metres, on the North Star and Una claims of the Mount Selwyn property.
