Capsule Geology

The Gus occurrence is located on a northeast-facing slope, west of Molybdenite Creek and approximately 3 kilometres northeast of the summit of Big Timothy Mountain.

Regionally, the area is underlain by gabbroic to dioritic rocks of the Buster Lake unit and granodioritic intrusive rocks of the Boss Creek unit of the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic Takomkane Batholith, which have intruded basaltic volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Nicola Group.

Locally, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite occur as disseminations within a porphyritic diorite near the northeastern margin of the Takomkane Batholith. Molybdenite and native copper have been reportedly identified in drillcore from the area.

In 1969 and 1970, the area was held by Virgo Exploration Corporation and Cyprus Exploration Corporation Limited as part of the ‘Area J’ or ‘J’ claims. These covered the area north and southeast of Buster Lake and were located along a northwest-trending airborne magnetic anomaly. Silt samples were collected from all the creeks flowing in and out of Buster Lake and a magnetometer survey was completed. This work identified four areas of interest due to geological formation, the presence of fractures and vein structures and/or the presence of unusually high molybdenum in silt samples.

Also, during 1969 through 1971, Exeter Mines completed a program of prospecting, geological mapping, soil sampling, a 41.0 line-kilometre ground electromagnetic survey and five diamond drill holes, totalling 598.4 metres, on the area as the Gus, SB and Silver Boss claims. Drilling is reported to have intercepted ‘considerable’ chalcopyrite in a diorite host from holes nos. 4 and 5 on the Gus 1 and 13 claims, respectively, whereas scattered pyrite and chalcopyrite were reported from the other three holes near the Silver Boss (MINFILE 093A 019) shaft and adit. No assays are known for the drillholes.

During 1993 through 1995, the area was prospected and sampled by Pioneer Metals Corp. During 2004 through 2012, Happy Creek carried out programs of prospecting and systematic stream sediment, soil and rock geochemical surveys on the area.
