The Valk occurrence is located at an elevation of approximately 340 metres on a steep, south-facing slope, near the north shore of Lake of the Mountains and approximately 2.1 kilometres southeast of Shushartie Mountain.
The area is underlain by tholeiitic basalt and homogeneous basic sheet flows of the Triassic Karmutsen Formation. Minor amounts of pyroclastic rocks and metasediments have also been reported.
Locally, propylitic veining has been identified at various locations along road cuts over a strike length of approximately 1.5 kilometres. The zones comprise quartz-carbonate veins, up to 0.10 metre in width, within amygdaloidal basalt flows. Vein clusters occur in deformation zones up to 10 metres wide and are characterized by strong epidote-chlorite haloes up to 0.20 metre wide. Disseminated sulphides including pyrite, chalcopyrite and bornite with malachite-azurite staining occur within and surrounding the veins.
Work History
In 1990, the King claims were staked by Transtel Communications and programs of prospecting, geological mapping and geochemical sampling were completed over the following two years. During 1993 through 1995, Westward Explorations completed programs of geological mapping, prospecting, geochemical sampling, magnetic and very low frequency electromagnetic surveys and trenching.
In 2019, Xplore Resource Corp. completed a program of prospecting and geochemical (rock, soil and stream sediment) sampling on the area as part of the Valk property. An outcrop rock sample (3267413) assayed 1.305 per cent copper and 4.0 grams per tonne silver, whereas channel samples (3269959 through 3269962) from the same area yielded an average of 0.163 per cent copper over 4.0 metres (Xplore Resources Corp. [2019-11-04]: Technical Report on the Valk Property, Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada). Also at this time, channel samples (3269951 through 3269954), taken from a site located approximately 500 metres east-southeast of the previous samples yielded an average of 0.251 per cent copper over 4.0 metres (Xplore Resources Corp. [2019-11-04]: Technical Report on the Valk Property, Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada).
