The Cana 9 occurrence is located at an elevation of approximately 1660 metres on a north-facing slope, approximately 650 metres south of Calling Lake.
The area is underlain by Bethsaida phase granodiorites to quartz diorites of the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic Guichon Creek Batholith. Anhedral quartz ‘eyes’ and ‘books’ of biotite distinguish this phase of the batholith. It is intruded by pinkish quartz porphyry and fine-grained, pink, sugary aplite dikes. The aplite dikes are commonly less than 15 centimetres wide, strike north and dip steeply west.
A pronounced topographic lineation strikes 140 degrees. A long trench on the Cana 9 (Terry 6) claim exposes a series of steeply dipping, weak shear zones parallel to this regional trend. Alteration associated with the shear zones consists of strong silicification and sericitization, plus oxidation to a depth of at least 3 metres. Minor chalcopyrite, bornite and trace malachite is present. In an old pit to the north the trench, abundant malachite is exposed with minor chalcopyrite and bornite.
A historical shaft in the area exposes a 4.5-metre wide band of sericitic porphyry hosting vuggy quartz veins, up to 0.6 metre wide, with chalcopyrite, bornite and malachite.
Work History
Historical trenches and an approximately 9-metre deep shaft, likely dating to the early 1900s, have been developed on the occurrence.
In 1956, Laco Mines Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping and trenching on the area as the Dominion, Nancy, Starnes and Terry claims of the Laco property.
In 1960 and 1961, Royal Canadian Ventures Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping and a ground magnetic survey on the area as the Bon, Call, Cana and Royal claims. In 1965, Cominco Ltd. completed a 12.8 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey, geological mapping and trenching on the Nancy, B.L. and Tom claims.
In 1966, Royal Canadian Ventures Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping, soil sampling and a 19.0 line-kilometre induced polarization survey on the area as the Cana, RC and Royal claims. The following year, three diamond drill holes, totalling 372.0 metres, were completed on the Royal 10 claim, located near the south end of Ok Lake. In 1969, Great Plain Development Ltd. completed a 27.0 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the claims.
In 1970, Great Plains Development Co. Ltd. completed a 16.3 line-kilometre induced polarization survey on the Royal claims. In 1972, Pan Ocean Oil Ltd. completed three diamond drill holes on the Royal 18 and 38 claims near Sack Lake, to the southeast of the occurrence.
In 1975, Trans West Minerals Ltd. completed six percussion drill holes, totalling 468.0 metres, on the area immediately east and southeast of the occurrence as the Royal claims. The following year, a further five percussion drill holes, totalling 450.0 metres, were completed on the area immediately east of the east end of Calling Lake.
In 1980 and 1981, Lornex Mining Corp. Ltd. completed 22 percussion drill holes, totalling 2487.2 metres, on the Royal, Cana and Bear claims.
Also in 1980, Cominco Ltd. completed 60.0 line-kilometres of ground magnetometer and induced polarization surveys on the area as the Island property. The following year, 22.9 line-kilometres of induced polarization surveys were completed on the property.
