A Tertiary shale occurs along the south side of Burrard Inlet near the Second Narrows Bridge. The top 1.8 to 3.0 metres consists of grey to white clay shale which has a crumbly texture and high shrink- age ratio. Studies indicate that the fire shrinkage is excessive to be of ceramic value.

Below this unit, is a blue-grey shale which has good plasticity. It is semi-refractory but also undergoes excessive shrinkage for use in ceramics.
