The bottom of Trout Lake, in Vancouver, hosts diatomaceous mud, consisting of the siliceous remains of fresh water Melosira diatoms. In 1933, the City of Vancouver granted Coast Quarries Ltd. the right to remove several hundred kilograms of diatomaceous mud. Several samples were shipped to Germany and to American equipment manufac- turers for testing. The material was classed as gritty with potential for use in sugar filtration.
