Capsule Geology

The McNab Creek Slate quarry is located near the shoreline, west of McNab Creek, on the north shore of Thornbrough Channel, Howe Sound.

The area is underlain by Lower Cretaceous metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Gambier Group. These rocks form a roof pendant in Jurassic to Tertiary Coast Plutonic Complex quartz diorite.

Locally, dark grey to black slate was quarried for use as flagstone, asphalt roofing granules and filler.

The quarry was operated intermittently between 1947 and 1963 by Richmix Clays Ltd. of Vancouver, BC. A total of 12,531 tonnes of slate was mined between 1955 and 1963.

In 1995 and 1996, the area was prospected as the Howe 1 to 3 claims. This work indicated that the slate formation extends a minimum of 4.5 kilometres north from the shoreline and has a minimum width of 500 metres, east to west, with a 90 degree vertical dip.
