Sandstone from a quarry on Denman Island was used to construct the Normal School and Drill Hall in Victoria and the Metropolitan Building and Dawson School in Vancouver. No production figures are available.
The northwest trending Upper Cretaceous DeCourcy Formation of the Nanaimo Group consists of 20 metres of sandstone underlain by minor siltstone and shale. The sandstone is light to medium grey in color, medium-grained (0.06 to 2 millimetres) and displays a uniform texture although thin (4 to 5 centimetres) beds of coarse (greater than 2 millimetres) sandy/pebble are present. Commonly, white to black cherty fragments (up to 3 millimetres) give the rock a coarse appearance.
The quarry is approximately 26 metres long and 17 metres wide and was developed in 3 benches along prominent joints striking northwest and dipping steeply southwest. Other irregular northwest striking joints dip moderately northeast while well-developed northeast joints dip vertically. Spacing between joints and fractures ranges between 0.4 and 20.3 metres with most spaced 1.5 metres apart.
Potential reserves extend for 100 metres west of the quarry along a prominent ridge.
