The Cow 12 (Pogo SE) occurrence is located on the ridge separating Chipman Creek to the north and the Chemainus River the south. The showing has been explored in conjunction with the Pogo (MINFILE 092C 074) occurrence.
Regionally, the area is underlain by chert, siliceous argillite and siliciclastic rocks of the Mississippian to Pennsylvanian Fourth Lake Formation (Buttle Lake Group) and volcaniclastic rocks of the Middle to Upper Devonian Mclaughlin Ridge Formation (Sicker Group). These rocks are intruded by granodiorite and quartz diorite of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite and gabbroic to dioritic rocks of the Triassic Mount Hall Gabbro. Undivided sedimentary rocks of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group locally overlay the previous units.
Locally, several mineralized shears hosted in northwest-trending fine-grained sediments of the Fourth Lake Formation are exposed along a road. These define a 100-metre wide zone of sporadic mineralization. The shears are up to 0.20 metre wide, gougy, limonitic and contain up to 5 per cent each of pyrite and chalcopyrite.
In 1964, a lone grab sample (39811) from a gabbro and/or diorite hosting heavily oxidized zones assayed 0.72 per cent zinc, 0.17 per cent lead and 0.13 per cent copper (Assessment Report 00566).
In 1985, a sample (No. 038) of altered, baked argillite assayed 0.472 per cent zinc, 0.125 per cent copper and 8.0 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 14462).
In 1986, chip samples from the shear zones yielded up to 0.06 gram per tonne gold, 10.6 grams per tonne silver, 0.502 per cent copper and 0.474 per cent zinc over 0.15 metre (Sample 4266), and a nearby sample (4264) assayed 0.49 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 16097).
In 2024, a rock sample (181434) of gabbro with pyrolusite and malachite staining, located approximately 200 metres north-northeast of the occurrence, assayed 0.284 per cent copper (Assessment Report 42177).
Work History
In 1964, E.M. Wilson of Canadian Pacific Oil and Gas Limited staked the original Pogo 1-4 claims and completed a program geological mapping, prospecting and geochemical sampling.
During 1985 through 1987, JBL Resources completed programs of geological mapping, prospecting, geochemical sampling, ground geophysical surveys and two diamond drill holes, totalling 99.5 metres, on the area as the Cow 12-16 claims.
In 2024, Fields of Gold Corp. conducted a program of geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling on the area as the C3 property.
