The Bluff 1 South occurrence is located at an elevation of approximately 1320 metres on a southeast–facing slope between Birk and Mable creeks.
Regionally, the area is underlain by the Graffunder Lakes, Skwaam Bay and Slate Creek units of the upper Paleozoic to lower Cambrian Eagle Bay Assemblage, which consist of micaceous quartzite, sericite-quartz schist, mudstone, siltstone, shale and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks. Local foliation strikes 135 degrees with a 5-degree northeast dip. The Cretaceous Baldy Batholith, consisting of quartz monzonitic intrusive rocks, lies to the north.
Locally, trenching has identified sphalerite in a felsic volcanic (tuff), whereas rotary drilling intersected silica flooded and chlorite±sericite–altered tuffs and volcanic (tuff) breccias hosting disseminated pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena and minor chalcopyrite.
In 1986, diamond drilling is reported to have yielded intercepts including 0.05, 0.27 and 0.23 per cent copper; 0.43, 0.92 and 1.31 per cent zinc; 0.28, 0.41 and 0.38 per cent lead and 2.6, 19.0 and 16.3 grams per tonne silver with 0.06, 0.04 and 0.26 gram per tonne gold over 14.6, 6.6 and 2.0 metres, respectively, in hole NDD-86-21 (Assessment Report 21208).
In 1987, rotary drilling yielded 0.074 per cent copper, 0.230 per cent lead, 0.364 per cent zinc and 2.6 grams per tonne silver over 30.4 metres in hole NRD-87-03 and 0.102 per cent copper, 0.623 per cent lead, 0.712 per cent zinc, 5.3 grams per tonne silver and 0.07 gram per tonne gold over 21.4 metres and 0.015 per cent copper, 0.241 per cent lead, 0.333 per cent zinc, 2.8 grams per tonne silver and 0.13 gram per tonne gold over 13.7 metres in hole NRD-87-08. Another hole (NRD-87-04), located approximately 200 metres to the west-northwest of the previous holes, yielded 0.107 per cent copper, 0.317 per cent lead, 0.554 per cent zinc and 3.7 grams per tonne silver over 15.2 metres (Assessment Report 17344).
In 1989, a rock sample (VA12288) from the area assayed 0.10 gram per tonne gold, 16.4 grams per tonne silver and 0.305 per cent lead (Assessment Report 19363).
In 1990, drillhole BC90-02 yielded intercepts of up to 0.30 per cent copper, 1.33 per cent zinc, 0.87 per cent lead and 40.1 grams per tonne silver over 0.5 metre (Assessment Report 21208).
In 2010, a rock sample (8R203520) from an outcrop of mudstone(?) located downslope of the drilled area yielded 0.145 per cent copper (Assessment Report 31647).
Work History
The area has been explored in conjunction with the nearby Percy (MINFILE 082M 219) occurrence and a completed exploration history can be found there.
During 1985 through 1987, Noranda Mining and Exploration Inc. completed programs of trenching and drilling on the occurrence. During 1989 through 1991, Falconbridge Ltd. completed programs of geochemical (rock and soil) sampling, geological mapping, 97.7 line-kilometres of combined ground magnetic, electromagnetic and induced polarization surveys, trenching and at least nine diamond drill holes, totalling 2619.2 metres, on the Bluff, Bet, Mac, Raven, Rust and Percy claims.
During 2005 through 2013, the area was prospected and (rock, silt and soil) sampled as the Stellar claims.
