Capsule Geology

The Shakespeare (Skylark) occurrence is located on Meadow Mountain near the head of Mineral Creek at an elevation of approximately 1890 metres.

The area is underlain by hornblende diorite and quartz diorite of the Jurassic Ruby Range stock, which has yielded a potassium-argon age of 123 million years (Geological Survey of Canada Open File 432). The Ruby Range stock intrudes lightly metamorphosed clastic sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks of the Triassic Slocan Group.

Locally, a quartz vein, ranging from a few centimetres to 1.2 metres in thickness, hosts galena, sphalerite, argentite and minor chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization. The vein strikes north-south and dips 42 degrees east. It has been traced, discontinuously, for a strike length of approximately 240 metres.

In 1949, sampling of two trenches or pits, located 15 and 120 metres to the north of the main dump and workings, yielded 80.0 and 109 grams per tonne gold, and 116 and 219 grams per tonne silver with trace and 13 per cent lead, respectively, whereas a dump sample assayed 9.6 grams per tonne gold, 113 grams per tonne silver and 10.7 per cent lead (Property File - Promistora Gold Mines Ltd. [1950-01-01]: Summary Report on Work Accomplished in 1949 on the Promistora Group of Mineral Claims).

In 1958, sampling of trenches located on the Skylark (L.5719) Crown grant to the south yielded up to 4.8 grams per tonne gold, 903 grams per tonne silver and 52 per cent lead over 20 centimetres from trench no.14 and 21.2 grams per tonne gold from trench no. 16 (Property File - F.C. Buckland [1958-06-01]: Report on the Promistora Group of Mineral Claims).

In 1967, a chip sample (4735) assayed 21.2 grams per tonne gold, 20.5 grams per tonne silver over 45 centimetres, while four grab samples from underground workings averaged 2.7 grams per tonne gold, 393 grams per tonne silver and 21.17 per cent lead (Property File - Tapin Copper Mines Ltd. [1971-09-07]: Report on the Meadow Mountain Group).

In 1971, a channel sample (no.2) from the south drift assayed 3.4 grams per tonne gold, 295.5 grams per tonne silver, 13.13 per cent lead and 1.45 per cent zinc over 90 centimetres (Property File - Tapin Copper Mines Ltd. [1971-09-07]: Report on the Meadow Mountain Group).

In 1985, an underground sample assayed 52.8 grams per tonne gold and 377 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 13797).

During 1901 through 1905, the vein was stripped and a 9-metre-deep shaft was developed with 15 metres of crosscutting and 45 metres of drifting being completed on the vein. Seventy-three tonnes of ore were stockpiled. In 1917, 1.4 tonnes were shipped to Trail in a trial shipment and are reported to have assayed 5.8 grams per tonne gold, 199 grams per tonne silver, 5.95 per cent copper and 3.1 per cent zinc (Property File - Tapin Copper Mines Ltd. [1971-09-07]: Report on the Meadow Mountain Group).

In 1949 and 1950, Promistora Gold Mines completed programs of geological mapping, prospecting and sampling. A bulk shipment of ore was reportedly shipped to eastern Canada at this time, but no records of the shipment exist. Between 1967 and 1973, bulldozer stripping and soil geochemical and geophysical (VLF-EM and magnetic) surveys were completed. In 1987, 8.2 kilometres of magnetic and VLF-EM surveys were completed, and 376 soil samples were collected. In 1988, magnetic and VLF-EM surveying (1.8 kilometres), road building (0.2 kilometre), trenching (357.8 metres) and channel sampling (76 samples) were completed on the property.
