Capsule Geology

The Spike occurrence is located about 500 metres east of Sundown Creek, approximately 4 kilometres southeast of its mouth in the Moyie River.

The area is underlain by a 3000- to 3500-metre-thick sedimentary sequence of alternating siltstones, argillites, and quartzites of the Proterozoic Middle Aldridge Formation. Gabbro-diorite sills of the Proterozoic Moyie Intrusions intrude the sequence. The structural character of the property is dominated by a large, property wide anticline and numerous northeast- and northwest-striking normal faults. A thick package of fine siliceous and carbonaceous sediments including the Creston, Kitchener, and Van Creek formations overlie the Aldridge Formation to the north.

During the 2012 field season of Kootenay Silver Inc on their "Spike's Big Adventure" (SBA) property, a program consisting of geological mapping, prospecting, and rock and soil geochemistry was completed. Results of mapping and prospecting revealed a number of fragmental units with associated intense hydrothermal alteration. Massive sulphide bearing float boulders discovered south of these showings may be directly sourced from these fragmental units, possibly as feeder systems.

In 2012, an outcrop of thin bedded mudstone is outlined on a map labelled “Spike's Big Adventure Geology”. The outcrop is marked as containing lead sulphide (presumably galena), chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. About 125 metres south of this outcrop is float sample SK12-14 (UTM 584697E, 5450678N) from a massive sulphide float boulder graded 0.12 per cent lead, 0.15 per cent zinc, and 2.9 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 34178). About 550 metres southeast of sample SK12-14 is another float boulder sample, SK12-20 (UTM 585050E, 5450225N) consisting of chloritized sedimentary fragmental rock containing galena, sphalerite, garnet and actinolite which assayed 40.34 per cent lead, 0.25 per cent zinc, and 771 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 34178).

Work History

In 1991, Chapleau Resources completed a program of prospecting, geological mapping and a ground VLF-EM geophysical survey on the area as the Sun claims. In 1992 and 1993, Cominco completed further ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys and a soil sampling program. In 1996, Sedex Mining completed 16 line-kilometres of ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys and two diamond drill holes, totalling 194.5 metres.

During 2012 through 2014, Kootenay Silver Inc completed programs of prospecting, geological mapping and geochemical sampling on the area as Spikes Big Adventure property. In 2012, Kootenay Silver Inc collected 12 rock and 101 soil samples (Assessment Report 34178). Samples SK12-14 and SK12-20 were collected from float boulders containing massive sulphides. Samples collected from the calc-silicate unit and underlying alteration (SAK12-1-5) returned low values for base metals. Five soil lines were completed during the program. The lines were run east-west at 25-meter sample nodes. Analyses produced spotty results but did show some elevated values for lead associated with at least one of the fragmental units. (Assessment Report 34178). In 2013, Kootenay Silver collected 34 rock and 54 soil samples (Assessment Report 34194).

In 2016, Kootenay Silver conducted a 25.7-kilometre VLF-EM and ground magnetic survey over their Spike's Big Adventure property (Assessment Report 36655). In 2018, a total of 240 soil samples were collected for pXRF from the Spike's Big Adventure (SBA) property, just north of the Spike occurrence (Assessment Report 37847).

In 2019, total of 77 rock samples and 486 soil samples were collected on the SBA property on behalf of owner Craig Kennedy (Assessment Report 38387). The SBA property covered parts of the previous Cruz property claims that were explored in the 1990s and early 2000s. Prospecting was also done over a large area from west of Stone Creek east through Sundown and Sunrise creeks. Samples in 2019 were collected in the area of the Cruz (082GSW066), Sunrise Surprise (082GSW091) and Spike (formerly Sun 4-5) (082GSW092).

In 2020, a program of rock and soil sampling was conducted by Kootenay Resources Inc. on their Moyie Anticline property utilizing both laboratory and portable XRF analytical techniques (Assessment Report 39483). During the 2020 field program more than 1420 XRF readings were taken and compiled. Several areas with anomalous lead, zinc, copper as well as gold were found during the program. The Moyie Anticline property covered parts of the 082FSE and 082GSW map areas.

In 2021, Kootenay Resources Inc. contracted Salt Spring Imaging, Ltd. to record and analyse magnetotelluric data on the Moyie anticline (Assessment Report 40348).
