The St. Joe showing is located on a small, west-flowing, tributary of Kiakho Creek, at an elevation of approximately 1200 metres.

The area is underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Aldridge Formation of the Middle Proterozoic Purcell Supergroup (Belt). Locally, the showing area is underlain by a tuff (St. Joe tuff) in gently dipping, thick-bedded turbidite layers in the upper part of the Middle Aldridge Formation. It is conformably overlain by a laminated silty argillite marker unit. East-northeast trending normal faults occur in the area. The Cranbrook fault is less than 1 kilometre to the north.

Locally, a vein has been explored intermittently since the turn of the century by underground work, trenching and diamond drilling. The showing comprises several small, less than 0.30-metre, quartz-carbonate veins with pyrite, galena, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite hosted in tuff. The host rocks contain elevated base metal values, particularly copper (up to four times background levels), in comparison to normal Aldridge sediments. A small, massive sulphide occurrence and tourmalinization occur within a sedimentary fragmental unit approximately 100 metres stratigraphically below the St. Joe tuff unit.

In 1954, Northwestern Explorations completed a program of geological mapping on the area as the St. Joseph group (Assessment Report 104). In 1966, Rimrock Minerals completed a 55.7 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the area (Assessment Report 895). In 1966 and 1967, Placid Oil completed a program of geological mapping, a 160.0 line-kilometre induced polarization survey, a 113.6 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey, and a 20.8 line-kilometre ground electromagnetic survey in the area (Assessment Reports 863, 1043, 1174, 1207). In 1997 and 1978, Cominco completed a program of geochemical sampling and geological mapping (Assessment Report 6444, 7087). In 1982, Cominco completed a program of soil sampling, trenching, geological mapping, and a ground electromagnetic survey (Assessment Reports 10717, 10845). In 1983, a lone drillhole, totalling 89.3 metres, was completed (Assessment Report 11570). In 1993, Consolidated Ramrod Gold completed four diamond drill holes, totalling 636.0 metres, in the area (Assessment Report 23135).

In 2013/2014, PJX Resources Inc began a large program of gravity and magnetic geophysical surveying to detect dense subsurface features (Assessment Reports 34082, 34937, 35416). The gravity survey extended 10 kilometres beyond the West Basin property claim boundaries encompassing several MINFILE occurrences including the St. Joe showing (Figure 8, Assessment Report 34082).
