The Howell 1 occurrence is located about 39 kilometres southeast of the town of Fernie, near the headwaters of Howell Creek.
The Howell 1 showing occurs in an area of quartzite possibly of the Middle Cambrian to Upper Cambrian Flathead and Elko formations, which are regionally mapped at this locale. To the immediate west, an area of limestone of the Devonian Fairholme Group is in contact (Assessment Report 13242, Sheet 1, Plate 3). The quartzite and limestone are intruded by masses of Cretaceous syenite and trachyte. Significant to extensive occurrences of syenite-trachyte dikes and breccias or plugs are reported to occur in this region. The Howell 1 showing itself, within the quartzite, consists of quartz veins with malachite and chalcocite.
