At the Taylor South occurrence, four coal seams are contained in the Jurassic-Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Kootenay Group) which is up to 183 metres thick in the north but which has been weathered away in the south and terminates against an erosional unconformity. The coal is interbedded with sandstone, siltstone and mudstone and is low to medium volatile bituminous in rank.

The lowermost seam, M seam, lies directly on the Moose Mountain sandstone and is lenticular in nature. The other seams named 10, 9 and 8, in stratigraphically ascending order, occur within a 40 to 55 metre section, 101 to 152 metres above the Moose Mountain sandstone. The 10 seam is very lenticular in nature, ranging from 0.0 to 4.7 metres in thickness. Ash contents vary from 16.7 to 32.6 per cent. The 9 seam is the thickest (1.5 to 7.0 metres) and most consistent of the seams in the area. It pinches out to less than 0.6 metre in the western portion of Coal Licence 4185. (Coal Assessment Report 445).

Rank varies from low volatile bituminous in the southwest to medium volatile bituminous in the northeast. Ash contents range from 27.5 to 50.8 per cent. The 8 seam is exposed only on the ridge to the east of Coal Licence 4185 where it ranges from 0.3 to 2.7 metres in thickness. The seam may be correlated with a zone of coaly bands to the south. Ash contents range from 32.0 to 45.5 per cent. (Coal Assessment Report 445).

In-place, partially explored reserves (inferred) are 967,331 tonnes for the 9 seam, and 127,629 tonnes for the 8 seam. (Coal Assessment Report 445).

Structurally the property consists of a north-northwest to north trending sequence with westerly dips ranging from 15 to 40 degrees. To the north are two minor folds trending north-northwest.

Pacific American Coal, a subsidiary of Texas and Oklahoma Coal Company (Canada) Ltd., acquired claims in 2014 that encompass the Taylor South prospect, and extend northward between Coal Mountain (MINFILE 082GNE001) and Taylor East (MINFILE 082GSE027), to the Tent Mountain (MINFILE 082GNE004) area. Pacific American Coal refers to this area as the South Hazell project.

Based on historic exploration, Pacific American Coal has identified two main exploration targets in the broader South Hazell project area. The South Hazell South target includes the Taylor South prospect (this MINFILE), and the South Hazell North target is located at the northern extent of the project area, adjacent to the Tent Mountain (MINFILE 082GNE004) past producer.
