The area is underlain by rock of the Devonian to Permian Knob Hill Group.

In 1897 a small opencut had been made in light coloured quartzitic rock, where there was 0.6 to 0.9 metres of very decomposed, red iron-stained quartzose rock and iron pyrites, dipping 45 degrees south. Gold was reported to occur. The claim was crown-granted in 1899 to John Dunn and E.A. Bielenber. The property was included amongst a number of other local properties that combined to produce 336 tonnes of ore in 1904.

In 1965, Noranda Explorations Company was reported to have conducted geophysical and geochemical surveys and drilled four rotary holes totaling 304.8 metres but these may have been on the Greyhound claim (082ESE050) which was part of the group. The Gem, was held by H.H. Shear as part of the Lode property which included the Morrison (082ESE052). I.P. geophysical surveying and 1 NQ drillhole were completed by Shear from 1990 to 1993. Most or all of the attention was directed to the Morrison claim and the area northwest of it.

UNDERLAIN BY PERMIAN ANARCHIST GP SEDIMENTS AND VOLCANICS, INTRUDED BY ACIDIC ROCKS OF CRETACEOUS NELSON INTRUSIVES. COPPER MINERALIZATION GENERALLY OCCURS WITHIN SKARN ZONES IN LIMESTONE OF THE ANARCHIST GP SEDIMENTS NEAR THE CONTACT OF THE NELSON INTRUSIVE ROCKS. NO FURTHER GEOLOGICAL INFORMATION AVAILABLE.
