The Buckhorn property is 2.5 kilometres west of Greenwood at an elevation of 950 metres, on the lower section of Buckhorn Creek. Access is by bush trail from the main road, 1.5 kilometres southwest of the Greyhound mine (083ESE050).

The Greenwood mining camp reached a height of activity early in the century with production from dozens of mineral properties. In 1894, the first record of work is documented on the Buckhorn claim, which gained Crown grant status in 1899. By 1901, a shaft was sunk to a depth of 67 metres and 82 metres of drifting was completed on two levels. At this time two car loads of copper ore were shipped, returning a slight profit. There was little subsequent work in the area until 1964 when Silver Dome Mines Ltd. built 16 kilometres of road, completed 4000 metres of stripping and 1860 metres of diamond drilling, in addition to a geochemical soil sampling program and a magnetometer survey. This was followed in 1966-74 by an IP survey, trenching, diamond drilling and percussion drilling programs sponsored by San Jacinto Exploration Ltd. See Tam O'Shanter (082ESE130) for additional work in the area.

The property was prospected by geologist Gordon Richmond in 1997 who was the reported owner of 3 contiguous 2 post mineral claims which included reverted Crown grants: Buckhorn (L.1107), Moreen Fr. (L.1709) and X.L.C.R. (L.1556S). Richmond mapped out some of the old working exposed on surface. One sample consisting of a semi-massive sulphide from an old trench yielded 8.64 grams per tonne gold, 11.0 grams per tonne silver. 9.4 per cent copper, 2 ppm lead and 90 ppm zinc (Assessment Report 25346).

The focus of much of the earlier work was a mineralized Mesozoic dioritic stock (Nelson Intrusions) which intrudes Permo-Carboniferous Knob Hill chert and greenstones. The mineralization consists of pyrite, chalcopyrite, native copper, malachite and molybdenite disseminations in the stock. The alteration is principally chlorite.

In 2007, Saville Resources established a 19.7 line-kilometre grid over the Buckhorn and Moreen occurrences to completed IP and ground magnetometer surveys.

In 2008, Saville Resources completed an excavator trenching program on the occurrence. Results showed 43.5 metres grading 0.37 percent copper, and 0.60 grams per tonne gold in trench TR 08-14, and 45.0 metres grading 0.57 percent copper, and 0.40 grams per tonne gold in trench TR 08-15 (Caron, L. (2012-11-16): National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report on the Bud-Elk Property).

In 2012, Saville Resources completed a soil sampling and mapping program over the 2007 IP survey grid.
